German term

Durchfixierung

German to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Laboratory Experiments on Rats
"Histologische Untersuchung bei Versuchsende
Nach Durchfixierung wurden die Organe zurechtgeschnitten oder Proben entnommen und im Entwässerungsautomaten weiterbearbeitet."

From a text about an experiment on lab rats. This is describing what happens after they're put down. The text has previously mentioned about organs being "fixiert" in formalin, which I guess is just fixed, but I have no idea what "Durchfixierung" is and can't find a translation for it (or the verb "durchfixieren" anywhere). Google searching for "fixed through" in relation to animal organs in experiments is utterly inconclusive. TIA for any light you can shed on this decidedly obscure word.

Discussion

Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Sep 21, 2012:
You are very welcome, Rowan. It is my pleasure...
SJLD Sep 20, 2012:
Indeed. And check out "durchfixiert" as in "vollständig durchfixiert". This is the point when the fixative has completely penetrated the tissue.
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Sep 20, 2012:
Hi Rowan: "fixiert" is not "fixed". It is "fixated". The process, in histology, is known as "fixation".

After complete fixation in formalin, tissues can be safely transferred to 70% ethanol at 4o C until processing. As implied above, under-fixation should be avoided.

agree Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. : It would seem to me that this is the correct translation for the term in question.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Complete fixation it is! Thanks for a thorough and convincing answer SJLD, and thanks to the peer graders for making my decision that much easier. But thanks also to Zareh for setting me straight about fixation. Appreciate everyone's help."

immersion fixation

This could be "immersion fixation", the other two major types being

"heat fixation" and "immersion".

**Immersion**: The sample of tissue is immersed in fixative of volume at a minimum of 20 times greater than the volume of the tissue to be fixed. The fixative must diffuse through the tissue to fix, so tissue size and density, as well as type of fixative must be considered. Using a larger sample means it takes longer for the fixative to reach the deeper tissue. Best in a slight vacuum.
