English to Spanish: Cochlear implant recipient rides the race of his life. General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Instruments
Source text - English Title: Cochlear implant recipient rides the race of his life.
Twenty-year-old dirt bike rider and cochlear implant recipient, Nick Cooke recently
undertook the ride of his life: the gruelling Tatt’s Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs, the red
centre of Australia. Entering on a motorbike he built himself with the guidance of a family
friend, Nick had been preparing for the two-day off-road, multi-terrain race for months. It was
his ultimate challenge since first learning to ride a motor bike at age three.
Encouraged by his parents, Nick grew up with a love of sports. Despite being deaf in his left
ear since birth and losing most of the hearing in his right ear during a family holiday in third
grade, Nick has never allowed his hearing loss to hold him back.
Receiving his cochlear implant at 10 years of age, Nick says it’s made “a huge difference”
to his life. From early on, he felt more included and his school grades improved. “I didn't
really have to sit at the front of the class anymore, I could hear the teacher,” says Nick. “I
could play card games or do an activity with another classmate, and not have to look at
them. I could just hear them.”
Nick’s cochlear implant system also offered the security of being able to hear cars and trams,
as well as what was being said around him – something that allowed him to ride his
motorbike and enjoy a wide range of sports growing up.
“At school I played racquetball, basketball, downball, tennis ... I did everything,” says Nick.
“I didn't really say no to any sports. I grew up motorbike riding, I grew up wakeboarding and
snowboarding.” He has worked out how to accommodate his CochlearTM Nucleus® 7 Sound
Processor under protective sports helmets.
Rather than motor cross, which often involves clusters of riders racing together, Nick has
chosen the Enduro events where participants race against the clock and with a staggered
start according to their position in a preliminary time trial.
“That's a bit safer with your enhanced gearing. In my opinion, it’s a little friendlier too ...
there’s less accidents ... it’s more technical,” says Nick who, given the noise of the engines,
doesn’t need to rely on his hearing during the race itself.
As well as gym sessions and running, working full-time as an apprentice landscaper helped
Nick prepare physically for this latest challenge which involved racing at speed for the three- and-a-half hours continuously each day.
With COVID-19 restrictions in his home state forewarned, Nick was able to get to the race
location before borders closed and compete for the first 230km. Racing in the competition
for the first time, Nick says his aim was not to be among the fastest racers, but to finish the
race and to “learn how to do it properly and safely” in the often deep sandy, desert
conditions.

English to Spanish: Inspirational Stories: Rick Riordan life. General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Inspirational Stories: Rick Riordan life.
Many people do not know Rick Riordan, who is a normal teacher, from
Texas, US. Inside his teacher's mask, he hides a mysterious talent that
is making up unique fantasy worlds. On the other hand, his interest in
history motivated him to study both northern myth and Greek myth.
His particular passion was abandoned by the daily scholarly routines that
allowed him to follow a safely organized rhythm as many professionals
nowadays.
With his charming wife, whom Rick met younger, both of them decided
to bet on teaching, becoming secondary school teachers in a small
village in San Francisco. Their lives were focused on that school. Their
undivided attention was led to give captivating entertaining lessons that,
unfortunately, had not had when they were teens.
But there was something Rick did not know that life takes many turns,
even more than he could want.
On a typical night, he decided to tell a bedtime story, at the request of
his sleepy son, to not sleep. After last night, he was clear that his son
wanted to continue listening to his father's short stories. Surprisingly, it
became a habit between them.
The following month, Rick found that he had no more stories to tell, so
he decided to talk about what he knew best; Greek mythology, such as
the Gods of Olympus and the Vikings.
Over time, these stories became endless, which seemed like long novels
like Don Quijote de La Mancha. The interesting thing for Rick is that his
stories were huge novels... Their stories were interspersed with youth,
interesting, mythological novels, such as The Lord of the Rings.
It is said that what you believe, you make real. Apparently, Rick's desire
was manifested by becoming a writer of novels for all generations.
The major motivation was his youngest son and being able to teach him
a huge life lesson that books transport you to incomparable worlds.
Moreover, Rick wished that his son's interest would be so much that he
Spanish learning.
Written by Oscar Felipe Núñez Alfaro.
For Majmoud Bentellis
would get lost in the magical world that he had built and that he would
see endless possibilities.
Surprisingly, professionals had diagnosed Rick's youngest son with
dyslexia, the same difficulty he presented when he was the same age.
For many, dyslexia is a disease, for others it is just a difficulty presented
by some young people in literacy, which fortunately does not affect
general intelligence. They are only diminished in some school areas, but
with a good guide they are even able to become writers, as is the case
of their father Rick.
Of course, every conflict requires a hero to solve it. But in this case, one
of flesh and blood was the one indicated for the task, since it required
patience and effort, virtues of a compassionate human being. As
expected, Rick could not miss the opportunity, knowing his vast interest
in the Greek heroes and their great exploits.
Therefore, his writing career began to make sense and after many
attempts he was able to publish his first novel for adults; The Three
Navarre. later, he published with great success his first book in the
series; Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus, and thus he
continued to reap literary successes.
Finally, as Rick expected, his son found motivation in stories, the power
of imagination within reading and comprehension in the novels that his
father told from that typical night.
The moral: ordinary people are, after all, the most extraordinary.
Do you have any moral to this story? Tell me about it.
Translation - Spanish Historias Inspiradoras: La vida de Rick Riordan.
Navarra, para luego publicar con gran éxito su primer libro de la serie;
