Slovenian to English: A Pictorial Chronicle of a Capital City
Source text - Slovenian Pozdravljena častitljiva Jazonova hči, počitek argonavtov, sedež škofije, dvor knezov, zaščitnica vernosti, svetišče Muz in dragulj radosti!
Translation - English Salutations, O Daughter of Jason, Repose of the Argonauts, Seat of the Diocese, Court of Princes, Defender of the Faith, Temple of the Muses, Jewel of Rapture!
It was with these words of exaltation that Bishop Johannes Gregorius Thalnitscher addressed Ljubljana in his historical narrative of 1714. Although such enthusiasm may today be considered somewhat anachronistic, many a contemporary author only with the utmost difficulty conceals his or her elevated pathos whilst describing this our metropolis. And this albeit the narrative making no mention of Jason or his Argonauts, nor of the fabulous creatures that contrived and kept his secrets; and notwithstanding its being presented with no mention of the splendour and riches found within this Horn of Plenty, nor of magnificent rulers, nor as a world of consequential events. Yet Ljubljana remains our Chosen City, the Slovene Parnassus, the cultural centre of this small section of the world, across which, for millennia, people have been on the move, leaving behind telltale signs, clues that testify to the creative presence of man.
This city has never been glorified in epics, nor have the events occurring within its walls been of particular interest to the chronicler. And although many a detail from its history is enshrouded in a cloud of mystery, a sufficient number of minutiae have been preserved to enable us to unveil some of this mystery. Concealed also is the very likeness of the city, especially that from the dim-distant past. The urban semblance of the earliest settlements remain particularly ambiguous to the modern psyche because of its sheer absence of everything that gives the city its contemporary identity.
