Source text - English The decolorization of the direct red 23 diazo dye, commonly used in textile industries, was investigated through the heterogenous photocatalysis mediated by zinc oxide, n type semiconductor combined with p type cobalt oxide at 30 °C. The mixture of n and p type semiconductors may form a p n junction, which can decrease the band gap energy and thus increase the photocatalytic activity.
This work reports the preparation and characterization of cobalt oxide and oxide mixture of Zn and Co in 1, 3, and 5 % proportions respectively, as well as their photocatalytic activity, measured by the diazo dye decolorization rate constants.
These oxides were characterized through the scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry. The suspension, formed from the diazo dye DR23 and the oxides mixture, was kept in the dark for 1 h at 30 °C for diazo dye adsorption on the oxide surface and irradiated by UV light for DR23 decolorization. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO was of 4.71x10-3 mol L-1 min-1,
while for the ZnO containing respectively 3 and 5 % cobalt oxide showed higher decolorization rate constant and of these, the mixture containing 3 % cobalt oxide showed the highest value of 5.56x10-3 mol L-1 min-1.
Translation - Portuguese A descoloração do diazocorante direct red 23, usado comumente em indústrias têxteis, foi investigada por meio da fotocatálise heterogênea mediada pela mistura formada por óxido de zinco, semicondutor do tipo n e óxido de cobalto, semicondutor do tipo p a 30 ºC. A mistura destes semicondutores pode formar a junção p-n e diminuir a energia de band-gap e assim, aumentar a atividade
fotocatalítica. No presente trabalho são relatadas a preparação e a
caracterização do óxido de cobalto e da mistura dos óxidos de Zn e Co por maceração em proporções de 1, 3 e 5 % respectivamente. As atividades fotocatalíticas foram determinadas por meio da constante de velocidade de descoloração do diazo corante direct red 23. Estes óxidos foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, dispersão de energia de raios-X, espectrometria de fluorescência de raios-X e espectrofotometria de reflectância difusa. A suspensão formada por diazocorante direct red 23 e óxido foi mantida
no escuro a 30 °C por 1 h para adsorção do diazocorante na superfície do semicondutor e submetida à irradiação UV até total descoloração à mesma temperatura.
