Interviewee: 지금 읽으라고요?
Interviewer: 네. 그래서 각 섹션을. 여러 섹션이 있거든요. 하나씩 살펴봐 주십시오. 보기에 어떠세요? 좀 쉽다고 생각하세요 아니면?
Interviewee: 첫번째 섹션은 제 정보와 관련된 거라. 병원이나 치과에서 늘 쓰는 거랑 비슷한 거 같아요.
Interviewer: 네. 그렇군요.
Interviewee: 눈이 잘 안 좋아서 잘 안보이는 거지. 이름 쓰는 거 제 이름 쓸 수 있고 사회보장번호, 생년월일 이런 건 어디 가도 쓰는 거라 이해가 금방 갔어요.
Interviewer: 네. 이해가 되십니다.
Interviewee: 이거는 “I am applying for individual credit..” 혼자 하겠다는 말이에요 신청을?
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 그리고 이거는 부인이랑 같이?
Interviewer: 네 그렇죠.
Interviewee: 아, 거기에 체크하라고요?
Interviewer: 그러니까 이걸 작성하는 게 아니고요. (10:00) 이 신청서를 보셨을 때, 어떤 느낌을 받는지 그걸 저희가 알려고 하는 거에요.
Interviewee: 첫번쨰 섹션은 좋아요. 편해요. 쓰는 거 늘 했던 거라.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 많이 해 봤던 거라. 그 다음 두번째는 어디에요? 이거에요?
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 이 내용에 대해서 모르면 지금처럼. 은행에 가면 한국인 직원에게 물어봐서 (그 내용에 대해) 이해를 해서 체크를 하면 크게 무리가 없잖아요.
Interviewer: 그렇죠. 근데 이렇게 보셨을 때, 어떤 느낌을 받으셨어요?
Interviewee: 이거는 간단하죠.
Interviewee: 간단하고…
Interviewer: 다른 데에서도 봤던, 뭐랄까 표준 같은 것. 그래서 눈에 익어서 좋아요.
Interviewee: 표준 같은.
Interviewer: 네, 그렇죠.

Interviewer: 두번째 섹션 보셨을 때, 어떤 느낌이셨어요?
Interviewee: 사실은 다른 거 보다도 글씨가 컸으면 좋겠어요. 이게 매우 중요하다고 생각해요. 왜냐면 집을 살 사람들의 나이가 저 정도 되는데, 제가 돋보기를 쓰는데 안 가져 왔거든요.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 이거 잘 안 보여서 시간이 오래 걸리는데. 종이를 아끼지 말고 글씨를 크게 하면 보는 사람이 (12:00) 굉장히 편리해서 더 잘 볼 수 있지 않을까. 이것도 중요하지 않을까요?
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 제 건의사항입니다.
Interviewer: 네. 이거 불러 드릴까요?
Interviewee: 아닙니다. 늘어 날까봐. (웃음) 이거는 사업하느냐. 직원이나 사장이냐에 따라서 체크하는 거잖아요. 앞에 있는 거랑 여기에 대한 질문과 같고.
Interviewer: 기분이 어떠세요 이걸 보셨을 떄?
Interviewee: 사실 제가 한국에서 오래 살았으니까 한국 같은 경우는 직원이냐 사장이냐에 따라서 은행 직원이 대하는 태도가 다르잖아요. 그렇죠?
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 사장이면 돈이 많을 것이고 사원이 주로 없을 것이라는 생각을 해요 한국에서는.
Interviewer: 그게 느껴져요?
Interviewee: 느껴지죠. 근데 미국은 그런 게 덜 하더라고요.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 저도 사업을 하고 있지만, 그런 게 덜해요. 직원들도 제 눈치 보는 일도 별로 없고 주급 받는 얘들이니까 주급만큼만 나는 일을 하면 되니까.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 그런 부분에서는 나쁘지는 않은 거 같아요. 그런데 솔직히 미국 사람이래도 내 소득이 얼마냐에 따라서 다른 건 많이 봤어요.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 은행 계좌를 개설하러 갔다가 자기 손님으로 하기 위해서 많은 혜택을 주더라고요. 돈을 많이 예치한 만큼.
Interviewer: 네, VIP처럼.
Interviewee: 그런 것처럼.
Interviewer: 신청에 대해서 초점을 한번 맞춰보세요.
Interviewee: 대출을 받으려면 내 소득이 얼만큼인지가 중요하니까 꼼꼼히 해야 되겠죠. 그래야지 거기서 네가 가진 게 얼만큼이니까 얼만큼 대출을 해서 이 집을 사라. 제가 신용도가 좋으면 (14:00) 이자율이 낮을 것이고 700점 이상이 되면.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 집을 렌트할 때도 그걸 보죠.
Interviewer: 그렇죠.
Interviewee: 그거(신용도)에 따라서 이자율이 낮아진다는 걸 알고 있어요. 은행 가서 물어보면.
Interviewer: 근데 이 신청서을 보셨을 때 느낌이 어때요? 그것에 대해서 너무 복잡하다 혹은.
Interviewee: 그런 건 아닌 거 같아요. 평균적으로.
Interviewer: 평균적으로.
Interviewee: 네, 평균적으로. 섹션 2도.
Interviewer: 섹션 2도 마찬가지고. 그래서 이것도…
Interviewee: 근데 영어를 전혀 못하는 사람들은, 특히 우리 와이프는 하긴 하지만, 저는 한국에서 영어 좀 배웠잖아요. 그래서 단어를 알아서 할 수 있지만, 영어 전혀 못하는 나이 드신 분들은 되게 어려울 거 같아요.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 못하죠 누가 도와주지 않으면.
Interviewer: 못하죠.
Interviewee: 아예 작성을 못할 거 같아요.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 이 신청서에 대해서는.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 아니면 한국사람들을 위주로 대출을 한다고 하면 여기다가. 요즘 우리 애들 고등학교에서 보면 영어하고 한국어하고 괄호 쳐서 설명을 해주더라고요. 그런 설명을 해주면 안 될까요?
Interviewer: 그러니까 한국어를 바로 밑에?
Interviewee: 네. 그러면 바로 쉽게. 어차피 그 사람의 정보를 원하는 거니까. 고객의 니즈를 파악해서 써 주면 좋지 않을까요? 제 생각을 크게 얘기한 겁니다.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 상세하게 쓰라고 하는 건 다 쓰면 될 거 같고요. 뒷장까지. 재산, (16:00)
Interviewer: 여기서 그렇게 꼼꼼하게 안 보셔도 될 거 같아요. 왜냐면 한 5분 정도의 시간을 두고서 볼 거거든요.

Interviewer: 그러니까 살짝살짜 넘겨 주시고…
Interviewee: 네, 살짝살짝. 일반적이거니까 하나는 별 개 없는 거 같고, 두번째는 은행에 관련된 거, 세번째는 재산, 집을 사려고 하는데. 지금은 없으니까 나랑 상관이 없겠죠.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 이거는 집을 살 사람들한테… 아, 집이 있는데 또 살 수 있으니까
Interviewer: 그렇죠.
Interviewee: 그런 경우라도. 네
Interviewer: 지금 영어가 완전하지 않은데 이걸 보셨을 때 어느 정도 이해가?
Interviewee: 저는 이해가 가죠. 근데 저보다 훨씬 못하는 사람은 힘들 거다.
Interviewer: 힘들거다.
Interviewee: 내용이 너무 많아.
Interviewer: 내용이 너무 많아요.
Interviewee: 네, 그리고 (다음 섹션으로) 넘어가면… 저는 말하는 게 힘들지. 듣고(듣는 건 괜찮아요).. 쓰는 게 제일 힘들죠. 대학 때 생각이 나니까, 저는 잘은 못 하니까. 근데 저보다 더 못하는 사람은 더 힘들지 않을까하는… 정말 못하는 사람들한테는 이게 힘들 거에요.
Interviewer: 지금 생각하시는 게 너무 많다.
Interviewee: 네, 내용이. (18:00) 대출이란 게 은행에서 받는 건가요?
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 차 살 때 그런…
Interviewer: 그렇죠.
Interviewee: 네. 아까 5분 (말씀 하셨고) 꼼꼼히 보지 말라고 했잖아요? 그냥 훑어서는 내용을 잘 모를 수가 있죠. 제 수준에. 이런 문서를 볼 때 특히 영어가 잘 안 되는 사람들이 굉장히 예민해지죠. 한국말이면 아까 이야기했듯이 바깥에서 설문하고 또 설명들었으니까 두 번만 들으면 뭘 원하는지 정확하게 아는데. 여기서는 변호사도 많고 서류도 집 렌트 계약할 때도 이만큼씩 되잖아요 계약서. 그런 거 보면 엄청나게 힘든 부분이 많으니까 되게 예민해지죠. 그래서 아까 이야기한 것처럼 저는 부가적으로 한국말을 집어넣으면, 물론 한국말이 한국 사람이 보기에 웃기게 해석이 될 수도 있어요 구글 번역처럼.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 그럼에도 불구하고 그게 있으면 편하고 안정감이 있죠라고 생각됩니다.
Interviewer: 네, 정확히 말씀해 주셔서 감사합니다.

Interviewee: Debt? 씌운다로 해석했어요.

Interviewer: 저희가 1시간을 넘지 말아야 하기 때문에 이 섹션을 조금…
Interviewee: 첫번째부터 (22:00) 당신의 빚에 대해서, 두번째는 재정 상태에 대해서.
Interviewer: 이 부분은 느낌이 어떠세요?
Interviewee: 문장이 너무 길어서 꼼꼼히 봐야 하고, 답답한 것도 있어요.
Interviewer: 네
Interviewee: 아까도 한국말로 보면 간단하게 “당신에게 큰 문제가 없습니다. 전혀 문제 되지 않으니까 걱정하지 마십시오.” 이렇게 이야기하면 되는데. 이거는 문제를 풀다 보니까 “귀하의 어떠한 법적인 조치도 뭐뭐뭐에 대해서 이걸 합니다.” 라고 이야기하니까 길잖아요. 영어 단어를 모르는 사람이 이걸 보면 기니까 더 헷갈리지. 간단하게 하면 될 거 같아요.
Interviewer: 네. 지금 이제 저희 동료가 와서 이 섹션을 주시하시라고 하네요.
Interviewee: 이거요? 한국어요.
Interviewer: 이제 5-C에 대해서 토론할건데. 섹션 5-C 참가자 언어 기본 설정 소개에 초점을 맞출 거에요. 섹션 5-C를 본인이 이해하는 말로 설명하실 수 있습니까? 그 섹션을 보셨을 떄.
Interviewee: 예, 한국어를 선택했을 때 한국어로 도와주는 사람이 있다고 하면 다행이다.

Interviewee: 내가 뭔가를 정확하게 할 수 있겠다, 뭐 그런 거죠.
Interviewer: 다행이라는 느낌이라는 거죠?

Interviewer: 없죠. 말하는 식으로 보통 대화하는 식으로 좀더 쉽게 썼으면 좋겠다.
Interviewee: (그렇게 쓰는 게) 예의에 어긋나는 것도 아니고 그걸로 인해서 잘못했다고 생각하는 것도 없잖아요. 오히려 더 이거는 그 사람에게 편의를 주기 위해서라고 하면 그 사람이 쓰는 단어와 문장, 문체? 이런 걸로 하면 좋지. 이건 구글 같은 데서 하는 딱딱한 그런 거 같아요.

Interviewer: Actually, since I had lived in Korea for a long time. In Korea, the attitude of a banker is different depending on whether you are a business owner or an employee, right?

Interviewer: Yes, I can. By the way, in American that kind of tendency is not that strong.

Reading this kind of document, those who are not good at English get sensitive. As I mentioned, if it is in Korean, after you are surveyed out there and listen to an explanation, you can understand precisely. Here, (in America) there are many lawyers and even when you sign an apartment rental contract the contract documents are a lot. Considering that, there are a lot of difficulty things and so you get sensitive. So, as I pointed out, if Korean is placed along with English additionally, of course Korean translation may turn out to be weird from a Korean’s perspective like Google translation.
Interviewer: OK.
Interviewee: Even so, if it is available I think it is going to be comfortable and stable.
Interviewer: OK. Thank you for making a clear point.
Interviewee: (20:00) What does “lien” mean?
Interviewer: Lien means a debt.
Interviewee: A debt? I thought it meant “to cover”.
Interviewer: I think that is a typical term used at the bank.
Interviewee: I never saw that before? So, you mean “lien” is a loan?
Interviewer: I mean, if you take out a car loan, your car is lien, a collateral.

If a person who doesn’t know much English vocabulary would get more confused with this because it is long. It would be good if it was simple.

Interviewer: Now we are going to discuss the section 5-C. We are going to focus on the section 5-C, the introduction to the participant language default setting. Would you be able to explain what the section 5-C is about in your words?
Interviewee: Yes. It is a good thing if when I chose Korean there would be somebody who could help me in Korean.

Interviewee: It means I could understand something precisely.
Interviewer: You feel it is a good thing?
Interviewee: Since I can get help. When my wife goes to a bank to do something, she worries because her English is not that good. But the moment I look at “Korean”, (I feel like it is good). If I were a Hispanic, I would feel comfortable with Spanish.

Interviewer: Why do you think so? Why do you think you are going to answer?
Interviewee: That’s because it is about my mother tongue. (If I can use Korean), of course I would ask more about things that I need, wonder, or want to know precisely. If I want to get something, it should be done in my language.

Interviewee: There are many people with different nationalities, who don’t speak English. So, I think that this section is here in order to check out in the middle if their understanding is good.
Interviewer: In order to check out in the middle.
Interviewee: I think checking out in the middle is to give them convenience and assurance about the information.
Interviewer: Then, what about the strength of this location? Would you tell me again please?
Interviewee: This location helps them to have an expectation that they may get help and so feel relieved. The location prevents them from continuing to have a hard time understanding because of unfamiliar vocabulary by moving forward.
Interviewer: It gives them a relief and raises an expectation. What do you think is the weakness of this location?
Interviewee: I think it would be better if this section showed up earlier, in the beginning, because there are those who are afraid of English, who cannot speak English though living here.
Interviewer: Right.
Interviewee: There are many people who don’t feel uncomfortable though they don’t speak English. In light of this aspect, if the section comes in the beginning, though I am not sure how important it is to put it in the beginning or the end, I think it would give people more comfort.
Interviewer: OK. Then the next question is, would you leave this question here or move it somewhere else? (32:00)
Interviewee: I would move it to the beginning.
Interviewer: To the beginning.
Interviewee: I am not sure if translated it correctly…
Interviewer: This study doesn’t focus on translation.
Interviewee: Oh, I see.
Interviewer: You just said that this question should move to the beginning and you wanted to see that more correctly. Then, I am going to give you a translated version. There is a translated one.
Interviewee: Yes, that’s good. Now I want to say, “Yes. Thank you” (laughter)
Interviewer: (laughter) Now please take a look.
Interviewee: About this (5-C)? (I would choose) “Korean”.
Interviewer: Please take a look. Is there anything that is strange, confusing, or incorrect in the translation? Is there any incorrect or inappropriate translation?
Interviewee: No, there is no inappropriate translation. I can see that my understanding of this Korean translation is different from that of the original text. So, I feel relieved to read this translation.
Interviewer: What is different?
Interviewee: I am not good at English, but those who worse than me would not be able to translate. This section (5-C) gives them comfort by saying “… does not mean that …. agreed to … it may not be provided… “. I just read it in Korean and could understand it more clearly.
Interviewer: OK. You mean the translation is good?
Interviewee: Yes, but there are some difficult words.
Interviewer: OK.
Interviewee: Too much… (34:00) “Your response … the lender … “This Korean expression is kind of… It is like honorifics for politeness.
Interviewer: OK.
Interviewee: They make it more difficult. It is talking about something ideal, but it sounds like Google translation result. You know what I mean?
Interviewer: Yes.
Interviewee: In actuality, nobody speaks or writes like this.
Interviewer: No. So, you mean it would be good if it is written conversationally.
Interviewee: Doing so doesn’t mean that it is impolite or doing wrong. Rather, it is for convenience. So, it should be written with common words and sentences, or the style that people use, not like Google translation.
Interviewer: So, how confusing is it?
Interviewee: Nothing is confusing. It is in Korean and so not confusing.
Interviewer: Do you have any suggestion or opinion about how to improve the translation?
Interviewee: As I mentioned, I think using common spoken or written language would make understanding more clearly and simply. For example, the elderly may even find this kind of Korean translation difficult to understand.
Interviewer: OK. Now I am going to ask you specifically about what is right below the choice section.
Interviewee: OK.
Interviewer: Here it says “Your answer does not mean that the lender or other parties concerned agrees to deliver or provide documents in your preferred language.” (36:00) Would you be able to tell me what “other parties concerned” means?
Interviewee: A lender is a bank. Other parties concerned are people like agents who provide loan services, something like non-monetary institutions? They are not a bank but an organization which provides loan services.
Interviewer: That’s right.
Interviewee: What I feel bad about here in America is that, unlike Korea, I get a credit card offer from a company I never provided my information. I feel bad about that and uncomfortable.
Interviewer: The third party.
Interviewee: how can they know about my personal information? I never transacted with them.
Interviewer: OK.
Interviewee: This is what I feel about “Others…”, or the non-monetary institutions or loan agents.
Interviewer: When I asked about who you thought are “other parties concerned”, you answered this way.
Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: Next, we want to make this text (the content in 5-C) a separate page from the application form in order to provide it for customers anytime during the loan process as another option. The content is the same as that in the application form. You will receive the application form and this (separate) page from the lender. Here, there is the addendum page option. Interviewee: OK.
Interviewer: It is in English.
Interviewee: Is it different from this (the application form)? (38:00)
Interviewer: Yes, this is an addendum.

Interviewee: I think they are the same.

Interviewee: For my convenience.

Interviewee: I think it is given for customers’ convenience to let them know about this (language support) or not worry because there is this (language support).
Interviewer: The next (40:00) question. We’d like to know the strength and the weakness of the separate addendum. What do you think is the strength?
Interviewee: The strength is, as I mentioned, it is given separately to consider those who don’t speak English.
Interviewer: What about the weakness?
Interviewee: I think there is no distinctive weakness. This is made to help them out, so there seems to be no weakness.

Interviewee: Right.
Interviewer: Do you want to receive this kind of addendum during the home mortgage loan process? If you receive this, is it okay to receive it separately?
Interviewee: I am fine with receiving it separately. Is the content included in the application form, too?

Interviewee: If included, it doesn’t matter like before (when there was no addendum but the application form only).
Interviewer: I mean, it is included there. Now, you receive this separately, do you want to receive this addendum separately?
Interviewee: No, I don’t.
Interviewer: Why do you think that there is no need to receive it separately?
Interviewee: There is no reason to receive it separately when it is included here (in the application form). The same question is in here, but (if it is given separately as an addendum) there is no need to do so. It is the same as 5-C, so there is no need to check it out here (in the addendum). Rather than that, it is better to read the translated version.
Interviewer: The last question is, do you think it is literally too much or little in terms of level of importance, to provide the separate addendum?
Interviewee: Literally?
Interviewer: This is way too extra.
Interviewee: Excessive?
Interviewer: I mean, when you receive this separately, do you think it is too much?
Interviewee: Yes. It comes to my mind, “It is written here, but when given something I need to answer again”.
Interviewer: OK. So, you mean that there is no need for the separate addendum.
Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: Now, we confirmed the two locations where the text (the content of the section 5-C and the addendum) can be located. We want to evaluate the locations and arrange them in order. (42:00) The following is a small sheet that lists the two locations. Let me give you this, a ranking chart.

Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: So, when you read the two options; the option that the application form includes the content as the section 5-C, and the other stand-alone option, which one do you think is better? You can choose 1 for the first one, and 2 for the second.
Interviewee: I would choose 1. Where should I put 1?
Interviewer: If you like that, then put 1 to “most suitable”.
Interviewee: Do I need to write 1?
Interviewer: Yes. Next, you don’t like the stand-alone type that much. In your case, you can write 2.
Interviewee: OK.
Interviewer: The question is about marking the location you like. So, what is included here (in the application form) and the separate…
Interviewee: So, you are asking which one I feel comfortable with; whether the content is given as an addendum or included in the application form? I am comfortable with what is included in there.
Interviewer: What is included in there.
Interviewee: I like finishing everything at a time. (laughter)
Interviewer: OK.
Interviewee: As I mentioned, I think there is something written like Chinese.
Interviewer: OK.
Interviewee: If English and Korean are written in the same way as English and Chinese together.
Interviewer: So, that’s what is related to what I am going to give you.
Interviewee: OK. I think Chinese or Hispanic people find it really convenient.
Interviewer: I’d like to show you another notification that a lender can provide. Please answer after (44:00) reading the questions in the same as in the daily life.
Interviewee: Is it okay to read this in Korean?
Interviewer: Yes.
Interviewee: (Reading) OK.
Interviewer: After reading, would you be able to explain what this notification is about in your words? Can you summarize?
Interviewee: Yes. Your mortgage loan transaction is highly likely to be processed in English. So, there may be a translated version to help you understand English. But a lender or a loan service provider cannot provide translation services or translated documents. So, you can use the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the website URL is this, which is HUD blabla. If you want to find a local HUD office, select the state you live in and the nearest neighborhood. I understand all.
Interviewer: OK.
Interviewee: Or, please call the US Federal Housing Corporation and find a counsellor. By the way, when finding one I need to speak English, which is too much for me. So, I would rather search the internet, slowly, carefully.
Interviewer: OK.
Interviewee: And you can find the website.
Interviewer: When you read this notification, what is your response?
Interviewee: If I have more questions, I would go to the website of HUD and find (answers).
Interviewer: OK. (46:00) That’s related to the next question, which is “Is this information useful?”.
Interviewee: Yes, it is.
Interviewer: There is a question, “are you going to contact a home counsellor?”. But you already said you would.
Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: When do you think is the best time to receive this information?
Interviewee: The best time to receive this information?
Interviewer: Yes, so you are going to ask about this (information). Just now you said you would contact a home counsellor. When you take out a home mortgage loan, when do you think is the best time to receive this information?
Interviewee: You mean when I buy a house or something like that?
Interviewer: Yes.
Interviewee: I said I would buy a house within 2 years, but that “within 2 years” can be tomorrow or in 2 years. At that time, when I get the necessary information that would help me make a decision.
Interviewer: So, right before you decide to buy a house.
Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: Right before.
Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: And is there anything that is strange or confusing in the translation? Is there any incorrect word or inappropriate translation?
Interviewee: That’s a good question. (laughter) As I mentioned, (this notification can be summarized as follows) “Your mortgage loan process is highly likely to be done in English. So, we can give you this help and you will receive this help. It can be provided here and here.” The end. How simple it is. But here there is redundant content. “Your mortgage loan process … highly likely to be done…. Highly likely… “What is the point of explaining how highly likely it is, like “You … a certain transaction…”? Why this way? What about the following? “Your mortgage loan process is highly likely to be done in English. So, you can receive documents translated from original English documents.”
Interviewer: You mean making it simple and short?
Interviewee: Korean sentences are listed so long (48:00) that you may think “what does this mean?” even when it is written in Korean. As I mentioned, these sentences can be cut into smaller ones and some can be taken away. Even so, the main point can be conveyed. What I want to say is that at least it should be conveyed that if you cannot get help you can go to this place and get help.
Interviewer: OK, by the way unnecessary…
Interviewee: There is too much stuff, I think. I am saying this because you told me to think out loud.
Interviewer: Thank you. The next questions, I will ask you one by one again. How much do you think the translated document is confusing or incorrect?
Interviewee: I don’t think it is. But it is too long.
Interviewer: Too long.
Interviewee: Yes, there is too much content.
Interviewer: So, do you have any suggestion or opinion about how to improve the translated document?
Interviewee: As I mentioned.
Interviewer: Also, I’d like to ask you some questions about this notification and the language (5-C) you read.
Interviewee: OK.
Interviewer: Now you can see all the documents: the application form, the Korean translation… The first question is, what do you think language support means when you received the application form that includes the section 5-C, the introduction to participant language default setting; and the borrower notification about language.
Interviewee: Language support is about an interpreter who can help me.
Interviewer: An interpreter.
Interviewee: An interpreter, a person who interprets.
Interviewer: An interpreter.
Interviewee: Yes, they can give me help through that kind of person.
Interviewer: OK. In the beginning of this interview you said you expected to receive a document in Korean (50:00).
Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: Do you think that these two documents will change that expectation?
Interviewee: That’s hard to understand.
Interviewer: I mean, these two documents are most important. In the beginning of this interview you said you expected to receive a document in Korean. After reading the two, do you think that expectation will change? Did it change after reading the two?
Interviewee: I didn’t understand that the expectation changed.
Interviewer: I mean, you had an expectation.
Interviewee: That in the beginning I would be able to receive Korean documents.
Interviewer: Yes.
Interviewee: By the way, after reading these two documents, did the expectation change?
Interviewer: I mean, is it (the change) positive or negative?
Interviewee: OK. I don’t my expectation changed. Through the two documents, I got more expectation that I will be able to receive services in Korean.
Interviewer: Did your expectation rise?
Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: OK. That’s what I was asking about.
Interviewee: OK. I feel relieved because it looks like I will be able to receive something for me.
Interviewer: Did your expectation go up after reading the two?
Interviewee: Yes.
Interviewer: Do you think that you will be able to any kind of language support if using the two documents?
Interviewee: Any kind?
Interviewer: Any kind.

Interviewer: What kind of support do you expect based on the two documents?
Interviewee: Through the documents, one can expect that information about mortgage loans or how to get a loan is going to be available in the standardized content on the website that supports Korean, when the language support from the service provider is provided.
Interviewer: Right.
Interviewee: (52:00) So, through that I think I will be able to get (information).
Interviewer: Thank you. Then, now there are these two documents. If you received 5-C only, not the notification, then do you think your expectation will change?
Interviewee: This (notification)?
Interviewer: No.
Interviewee: This (5-C)?
Interviewer: Yes.
Interviewee: No, it doesn’t change because I understood only through this section. I understood one time, so my expectation won’t change.
Interviewer: This time, if you didn’t receive this(5-C), but this (notification) only.
Interviewee: OK. Even so, nothing changes.
Interviewer: I am changing the question. If you received this (notification), do you think the expectation that you will be able to receive language support will change?
Interviewee: No. I think it is about the same.
Interviewer: About the same? Why do you think so?
Interviewee: That’s because the two documents have no big difference in terms of their content. Basically, they have the same content.
Interviewer: So, when you received the two, and when you received either one of them…
Interviewee: There is no difference to me.
Interviewer: When you received them separately, there is no difference?
Interviewee: No, there isn’t.
Interviewer: So, you feel that the three cases are the same?
Interviewee: Yes. Since there is at least one document that helps me to understand in Korean other than English, only one (document) is sufficient for me in view of my English proficiency. But those who are worse than me in terms of English proficiency will definitely prefer more Korean support. At my English proficiency level, more documents don’t make any difference.
