voltage-range multiplier

Voltage-Range Multiplier
A component or circuit which extends the range of an instrument. For example, a voltage-range multiplier (2).
A precision resistor utilized in series, to extend the voltage range of an instrument such as a voltmeter. Also called voltage multiplier (2), instrument multiplier (2), or multiplier (5).

Posobnik (opornik dodatkowy) – przetwornik napięcia na prąd. Jest to bardzo dokładny rezystor. Włączony szeregowo z miernikiem, którego wskazania są funkcją prądu służy do rozszerzenia napięciowego zakresu pomiarowego takiego miernika.

OTHER NAMES
instrument multiplier
A highly accurate resistor used in series with a voltmeter to extend its voltage range. Also known as voltage multiplier; voltage-range multiplier.

(series-connected) multiplier resistor

a series-connected multiplier resistor

When a sensitive meter movement needs to be re-ranged to function as an AC voltmeter, series-connected "multiplier" resistors and/or resistive voltage dividers may be employed
http://www3.eng.cam.ac.uk/DesignOffice/mdp/electric_web/AC/A...

a multiplier is a resistor connected in series with the meter.

This is exactly the idea of a multiplier resistor: it effectively "multiplies" the voltage sensitivity of the basic meter to allow measuring higher voltages, without affecting its current sensitivity.

agree Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. : A sensible alternative.

Thanks. I guess I have focused more on it being a resistor connected in series which effectively multiplies the voltage range while it's probably enough to say it's a voltage multiplier as you suggested in the discussion.
