500 meters in the upper reaches to 2 kilometers in the lower reaches.
I think you should spell out "meters" and "kilometers" unless you're short on space (as in a chart). I think "upstream" and "downstream" are directions, whereas "upper" and "lower reaches" are areas of the river.

: "meters" and "kilometers" should always be spelt out. I also noticed some colleagues use "=" to mean "could be translated as", as in "kilometers=公里" .
