Spanish term

con diagnóstico de hipertensión arterial sistémica de 40 años de evolución

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
Good afternoon!

I'm translating a rather short medical document from Mexico and am having a hard time with the portion of "40 años de evolución". The full sentence: la cual cuenta con diagnóstico de hipertensión arterial sistémica de 40 años de evolución.

In English, we don't really use evolution much in this context so I think that is what is throwing me off. In this case, is it "Diagnosed with systemic arterial hypertension 40 years ago" or "With a diagnosis of systemic arterial hypertension developing for 40 years? or perhaps "lasting 40 years?"

I appreciate any and all feedback!

Thanks in advance.

Neil nailed it ;)
Maybe also "long term hypertension (40 years)".
Taliah Jackson (asker) Sep 30, 2021:
Hi @Neil ! Thank you so much for your input! That's what I thought.

I appreciate it!
Neil Ashby Sep 30, 2021:
Hi Taliah IMO, your first option works best - "Diagnosed with systemic arterial hypertension 40 years ago".
Or something like, "with a 40-year history of art. HTN".

If the document is for patients, I'd consider "high blood pressure" instead of "arterial HTN".

with a 40-year history of systemic arterial hypertension

Before seeing Neil's suggestion, I had already thought of 'with a 40-year history of SAHT'. I'm entering the answer here because I actually don't agree with the other suggestion, 'diagnosed with SAHT 40 years ago'.
The word "diagnóstico" is used ambiguously in Spanish; wwe don't know if it refers to the present or the past. Also "evolución" isn't adding anything helpful to the concept, as Neil noted.
There may not be a smooth way to say 'a history of SAHT' in Spanish. Maybe the author used an expression that is more typical in the language. Would it sound natural to say "una historia de SAHT de desde hace 40 años"? It doesn't seem quite right to me, but I'm not a native speaker.

Also, 'diagnosed with SAHT 40 years ago' doesn't make it clear that the condition has continued for 40 years (which is implied in the world "evolución").

or "high blood pressure" for a patient audience.

Before Muriel had thought of 'with a 40-year history of SAHT', I had already suggested it in the discussion 1 day earlier.
So I might as well put it as a proper answer....
