Swedish term

forskningsperson / forskningsobjekt

Swedish to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
The context is participants in a clinical trial - I thought forskningsperson was research subject but not sure what forskningsobjekt is? Thanks!

Discussion

Michele Fauble Dec 13, 2020:
@Leif The same objection has been raised to the “dehumanizing” term “research subject”, hence the increasing use of “research participant”.

@ all Hello everyone

This is gonna be very hard

Looking at Michele's suggestion, I now realize that "research subject" may be ambiguous without context.
I had it as a person whereas Michele has it as an aim or objective and I can't say that either of us is wrong or right.
And then Leif's remark about "forskningsobjekt" seems to suggest that for him, it's a person whereas I think both me and Michele saw it as "an aim/objective/field of study" yet he is the native Swedish speaker

I'm completely lost now so I'm going to ask another Swede for input.

Leif Ohman Dec 13, 2020:
A distinction lost in translation? The term "forskningsobjekt" raises ethical concerns in a way that "research subject" might not.

A person should never be treated like some kind of object, but for a person to be some kind of subject may not be so bad?

Similar to how it is far better be a "sexig person" than to be a "sexobjekt".
Michele Fauble Dec 13, 2020:
In the context of clinical trials, ‘forskningsperson’ and ‘forskningsobjekt’ are synonymous.
In other contexts ’forskningsobjekt’ is often used for the subject a study is investigating.

In the context of clinical trials, ‘forskningsperson’ and ‘forskningsobjekt’ are synonymous. Both can be translated as ‘research subject’ or ‘research participant’.
Peer comment(s):

agree Agneta Pallinder : Particularly with last note. Academic texts often use forskningsobjekt as the subject (not a person) of their research. Ethical Board forms, on the other hand, specify that forskningsperson and forskningsobjekt are the same.

research participant (human subject) / research subject

I see though that "forskningsperson" is translated occasionally as "researcher" and not what I've said so it would be nice if a Swede or others could confirm or contest my suggestion

Did not find anything for "forskningsobjekt", so perhaps not a regulatory term?
