The two answers above are correct, but if this is a novel, I think it needs to be phrased more accessibly.

"...but if they said it wasn't worth fifty cents, then that valuation would stand, and since this wasn't enough to pay off the debt, they'd have to make up the rest with anything and everything they owned."
