Death in traffic accident
Good morning!
I am still translating witness statements regarding a traffic accident in which a person died and would appreciate help with this phrase.
Not quite sure about this, although I have found "falling off a cliff..."but what is involved in my text is a "barranco" = bank.
Here is the context:
Agrupación de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil, Detacamento de Motril
Atestados e Informes
Thank you!

the vehicle running off the road
From the Oxford Spanish:
despeñarse [A1] verbo pronominal «persona/mula» to go o fall over a cliff (o precipice etc); «coche» to run off the road, go over a cliff (o precipice etc)

or if you wanted to be more specific:
running off the road and down a bank

: Barranco can also be a cliff or dry watercourse, but inland (ie, not "acantilado" as in Dover). I'd say "falling off" but I guess that's splitting hairs.

: Sorry, Simon, but I think the "running off the road" bit is "salida de vía", just before; "despeñamiento" is falling from a considerable height. The Oxford entry finds no support elsewhere and I think it's wrong.

I see your point, but we do not know the nature of the bank/cliff/precipice that the car goes down, hence my answer being more vague. I envisaged "salida de vía" as being "left the lane"

Note from asker:
Hi Eski, I appreciate your contribution, but as this occurred in a forest, I am going with "gully"...this is why I posted the question, as I could not fathom how a cliff could be in/near a forest...? |
Something went wrong...
