Spanish term

patologías diana

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
This is for a homecare service provider. And it lists the "patologías diana" for which they provide care.
Any ideas?
thanks

In the end, the customer who's always right (!) has gone for Target Diseases
Anna Moorby DipTrans (asker) Jul 8, 2010:
Wishing you good health with your 'condition' too!! Absolutely agree that in medical translations ad verbatim translations are best, but this is a leaflet adversing homecare services, so is probably aimed at people like me who like to hide their head in their sand as regards their particular lurgies :o)
liz askew Jul 8, 2010:
p.s. unfortunately we can't use "lurgy" here!!
liz askew Jul 8, 2010:
Hello Anna, sorry to have touched on a sensitive point, particularly as you have asthma. As I do a lot of medical translations I tend to translate verbatim what the medics say, so if they say "condición" this = condition, if they say "patología" this = disease...etc. etc. I don't mean to be insensitive, it is just a word to me. I have a "condition" too but won't go into that on this forum:) :) Wishing you good health and an understanding doctor who supplies you with good advice and medication:) Cheers!
Anna Moorby DipTrans (asker) Jul 8, 2010:
Well I've presented all the possibilities to the client and we'll see what they say!
Liz, I think that culturally we try and avoid using the word disease for some things, even though technically they are, because it makes them sound worse! Or maybe it's just me!! I have asthma, and I much prefer to think I have a condition rather than a disease!
liz askew Jul 8, 2010:
You could always use "diseases and disorders". Anyway, I would speak to your client, as they seem to be the ones in control here:)
liz askew Jul 8, 2010:

Anna Moorby DipTrans (asker) Jul 8, 2010:
My hesitation over using the word diseases is that the list includes things like asthma and sleep apnoea. OK, think I'll present the client with a number of options and see which one they like best
liz askew Jul 8, 2010:
Good morning Anna! Perhaps it would be a good idea to present your client with all the contributions you receive (there could be others:)) and see what he/she says. Would be very interested to know.
Anna Moorby DipTrans (asker) Jul 8, 2010:
Hi there, this is a Spanish company, and I should have mentioned, that I translated this term as "Target Conditions" and the customer has complained about this translation and wants a different one!
liz askew Jul 8, 2010:
After all that, I should have asked which country we are talking about here? Thank you!

priority diseases

Explanation:
I can understand why you asked this question and this is why I have put a level 3 confidence..

There are no hits for "target pathologies", not for "target diseases", unless it has

treatments that target...

so, I am suggesting "targeted", although most sites discuss "targeted treatments.." so really this is a tricky one.

Also, diseases seems to be used more than pathologies. Rarely do I hear doctors talk of pathologies.

Anyway, these are my thoughts.

I could not find anything definitive on a WHO site either:)

Currently, four different immunological domains are recognized and prioritized for curation within the IEDB. As first priority, Infectious Diseases and Microbes have been targeted, followed by Allergy, Autoimmunity and Transplantation. Accordingly, the curation of all references from Allergy and Infectious Diseases is nearly complete (>80% and 90%, respectively). In order to enhance the curation prioritization process, we recently further categorized all potential references into six main immunological domains, or classes. These classes include the four original domains: Infectious Disease and Microbes (excluding HIV), Allergy, Autoimmunity and Transplantation, plus HIV (including SIV and related viruses) and Cancer. References containing immune epitope data, but not pertinent to any of the main classes were categorized as “Other”. This detailed classification allows not only for enhanced prioritization, but also enables a more accurate/thorough description and accounting of the IEDB reference data.

WHO increases priority diseases for surveillance
The World Health Organisation (WHO), has increased Ghana's priority diseases surveillance to ensure their eradication from 23 to 44 to include other emerging and re-emerging diseases.

The emerging and re-emerging diseases include severe acute respiratory syndrome, avian and pandemic influenza, lishmaniasis, pertussis, cikungunya fever, non-communicable diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and asthma.

Dr Lawson Ahadzie, head of the Disease and Surveillance Unit of the Ghana Health Service, said this at the opening of a two-day meeting of the Unit to revise Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) Technical Guidelines.

The guidelines under review were prepared in 2002 and have been used since then working with the 23 priority diseases selected for surveillance.

He noted that most surveillance systems did not include pneumonia and diarrhoea, which were the first two causes of childhood deaths.

So. I am going for it.

Final contribution:

Priority diseases.

Another thought

medical conditions

would be better

than just "conditions".
Peer comment(s):

agree MJ Barber : with you on pathololgies/diseases, but "targeted diseases" is good enough for WHO, should be good enough for Anna's client

OK, I just could not find "targeted diseases" on any WHO site:) but I agree it is more suitable that "target"...
