See Explanation box I have added a note in my Explanation box which may help clarify "financial assets." Have a nice day.
Evan Tomlinson (asker) Sep 7, 2009:
"Financial assets" almost certainly correct Greetings all; I think John here must be right... the term fits with the related subcategories of the financial statement I'm translating. I'm supposed to wait 24 hours to give points, however, so I'll leave the question open till then. Cheers, Erik

financial assets

The following definition appears in Barron's Finance & Investment Handbook:
Assets in the form of stocks, bonds, rights, certificates, bank balances, etc., as distinguished from tangible, physical assets. For example, real property is a physical asset, but shares in a REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT TRUST (REIT) or the stock or bonds of a company that held property as an investment would be financial assets.

Hope this helps.

I am adding this note to make a distinction between financial asset and financial fixed asset.

The term "inmovilizado" means "fixed" as in "activo inmovilizado" (= fixed assets). Inmovilizado financiero or financial fixed assets (or, alternatively, long-term financial investments) is that part of the total financial assets which are "fixed",- i.e., it is not the intention of management to convert the asset into current asset within a period of one year. By definition, a fixed asset is an asset used in production or operations from which the current portion has been deducted. In the same manner, a financial fixed asset is a financial asset that the company does not plan to sell or convert into cash, cash equivalent, or any other current asset within the current financial period. Such financial assets as bank deposits which mature within one year, are not "activo inmovilizado" or financial fixed assets. Saying that inmovilizado financiero is financial asset (= activo financiero) is like saying that England is the United Kingdom or that Germany is the European Union.

The following texts from reliable sources may help one understand this distinction:

FINANCIAL ASSETS, from the Business Dictionary.

Financial assets, from the Investment Dictionary
An asset that derives value because of a contractual claim. Stocks, bonds, bank deposits, and the like are all examples of financial assets.Unlike land and property--which are tangible, physical assets--financial assets do not necessarily have physical worth.
(ibid)

FINANCIAL FIXED ASSETS, from economia48.com (translated):

Assets of a purely financial nature which a firm owns and which are not directly used in the production process. Its objective is to maintain control of its affiliates/subsidiaries and stable equity participation in other companies via the ownership of shares, debts/obligations, credits, bonds, etc.
