Dear colleagues from Proz.com,

I have been considering the possibility to learn Swedish by my own, and I would like to know if you could give me some recommendations about resources that could come in handy, e.g., on-line dictionaries, web pages, etc. It would be of much help.

Thanks a lot,
Ramsés.

Hi Ramses,

This site has free courses that help you memorise various things, including vocabulary and common expressions in a language you want to learn. They have Swedish, too:

I don't think it would be enough as your only resource for learning a language, even in the beginning, but I like the way it works and I think it's very good for things that you just have to memorise at some point, like vocabulary. Your progress is saved, so it's easy to go there just for 10 minutes, if you like, when you have a spare moment. Kind of an alternative to making wordlists that you carry around with you. I have started learning Chinese characters there myself just for fun.

I hope this helps,
Heini

WordFinder Jan 3, 2013

WordFinder includes a web reading utility, "Easy Reader", where you follow a line with a mouse like you would with your finger, and a small window shows what the translation for that particular word is.

Thank you very much for your help Jan 7, 2013

Dear colleagues from Proz.com,

Thanks a lot for your suggestions, they are a great help! Evidently, I don't plan on using just these resources to learn the language; in fact, a relative of mine knows a Swedish private teacher, so I will probably be taking private lessons very soon.

Good bye, and thank you a lot for your help again!

Take your time Jan 7, 2013

I've been learning Swedish on-site for donkey's years, ie, more than half my life, and it's not easy.
Don't expect too much during the first ten years...

Enjoy it!
I'm glad you have found a Swedish treacher, because pronunciation is difficult to learn if you don't get it right from the start. You will need to keep practising. Try to contact other Swedish people, or listen to radio and recordings - they will help you and encourage you, so you can get something out of it even from the beginning.

I can read Swedish fairly well, but as I speak Danish, I don't speak Swedish... The 'melody' is just too different, and it annoys me, though my Swedish family are very nice about it and speak English or Danish to help me out.

Just don't give up, and good luck!

Lots of material available Jan 21, 2013

Have you tried lingq.com? Plenty of texts with audio there.
There's also a free course from the FSI institute, if I'm not mistaken.
