Area selection in PDF conversion tools — how important is it for you?

As many of you, I often use PDF conversion tools such as ABBYY FineReader and PDF Transformer. When dealing with this kind of software, I absolutely refuse to use anything that doesn't let me select areas like text, images and tables in the document because automatic algorithms don't always recognize the layout correctly or optimally for my purposes.

How important is area selection for you? Do you rely on tools that don't offer this functionality?

I find that carefully selecting the areas of text correctly - as well as using the button to remove anything on the page that is not to be included in the text to be translated - is a very good way to produce a much higher quality OCR than is otherwise produced automatically. I then save a lot of time on the subsequent file preparation.
