Dear friends,

I am trying to work out how to change User ID in SDL Trados Studio 2011 Freelance. Previously I had SDL Trados 2007 and it was very simple - in Translator's Workbench I chose 'Settings' and then 'User ID#. This allowed me to give different User IDs to different projects. When previous translated sentences came up while translating, it was very useful to see at a glance what projects those translated sentences came from. For your usecase... Jun 15, 2013

... why not just create a field and then you don't have to change anything, you just type into the field in the update menu whatever you want to be added to each TU as you work.

Regards

Paul

Question for Paul Jun 16, 2013

Paul, I'm assuming from your reply that there is no simple way to change the user ID in Studio. Are there plans to add this functionality sometime in the future?

Thanks,

Valeria

Not sure how to do that Jun 17, 2013

Hi Paul,

Thanks a million for your help. However I'm not sure how to apply what you suggested. I went into the Translation Memories view, then clicked on my main TM, then 'Settings', then 'Fields and Settings'. I then added a field, giving it a name under 'Name', choosing 'Text' under type and clicking the box for 'Allow Multiples Values'. I couldn't find any 'update menu'. My efforts didn't result in any change in my User ID. Any further guidance would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

I'm resuming this thread since I would like to know if there is any news about this annoying issue.

I don't want the TMs to store my computer name, nor my Windows username.

This involves fields like:
- Last modified by:
- Last used by:
- Created by:

By the way, is there any tool to convert TMX into SDLTM?

Thanks a lot
Gianni

I’m not sure I understand your question here as it doesn't really seem to match the original one.

There will be no further development work to enhance Studio 2011. Bug fixes yes, but enhancements no. Studio 2014 however will allow you to set the username that is stored in the TM. So you can decide what’s used whether you are translating or whether you are updating a TM with someone elses work. There is an article here about some of the new features in Studio 2014 and this one is mentioned half way down with a little bit of information on how it works : http://wp.me/p2xDjK-sn

On the fields you mention. These are always stored irrespective of the version of Studio you use.

The easiest way is to just upgrade the TMX in Studio, or import it into an existing TM. You don't need additional tools for this. there is a video here that might be useful for you as it is Studio 2011: http://youtu.be/bfGJYTisNr4

UserID ≠ User Feb 4, 2014

The original question was: How to change User ID?

User ID is the identification item which Studio 2011 gets each time it opens, and it's under this format: Computername\WindowsUsername.

I tried to change it in the Windows Registry (SDL section: CurrentUserId), but it is fetched again each time the program opens (via a Getcomputername function I suppose).

Well, it's the UserID that is stored in the TM as I explained, and it's the feature I don't like.

Yes, I know the easiest way to convert the TMX is doing that in Studio itself, but I can't, since Studio stores the UserID in the SDLTM again.

I exported the SDLTM into TMX, changed all the UserID occurrences in a text editor, then I converted again the TMX into an SDLTM, but I saw Studio changes the UserID again as a result of the last conversion...

Thanks anyway
Gianni

UserID issue Feb 6, 2014

User ID is the identification item which Studio 2011 gets each time it opens, and it's under this format: Computername\WindowsUsername.

Does Studio 2014 still gets this data on program opening?

Workaround for 2011:
- create a new Windows user account (with the name you want to be stored in Studio TMs) to switch to each time you have to use Studio
- change your computer name each time you have to use Studio

Thanks a lot
Gianni
