Про меня.
И лет жизнь коснулась. И чувства отгорели. И никакого тебе огня и пламени, а одна только зола бывших дерзаний и терзаний, взлетов и полетов во сне и наяву. А золото на счетах и кредитных карточках звенит себе потихоньку, усыпляя и одурманивая. Не очень-то много его, золота, хотелось бы побольше, но кое-что звенит же, не сравнить с тем, что было лет каких даже десять назад, когда ни про какие тысячи в свободно конвертируемой валюте никогда и не мечталось.
А самое-то страшное, что «полет нормальный», что эта заманчивая музыка на мотивы, намурлыканные Гобсеком и скупым рыцарем, для души действительно намного приятней, чем бунтарские рок-н-рольные напевы семидесятых «оттуда» и восьмидесятых «отсюда».
Может, «честь безумцу, который навеет человечеству сон золотой»?
Стоп!
Но если эти слова все-таки что-то пережимают где-то там в душе, откуда слезы идут, если при чистосердечном признании о всей приятности музыки пиастр и дублонов, кредиток и кредитов все-таки что-то в этой душе скромно заказывает другую музыку (правда, нечем ему переплатить эти пиастры и дублоны), значит… все может повернуться вспять? Значит, и в эти лета, которых жизнь уж куда как надежно коснулась, все-таки может прикосновенье красоты развеять чары прагматики, может могущественный смычок дойти до всей души целиком и разбудить ее всю, без остатка, чтобы она проснулась ото сна душой цельной, в одном экземпляре, а не такой двоедушной или двадцатидушной, как она есть сейчас, во сне своем? А если может душа это все услышать и так ее могут эти слова прищемить, то не проснулась ли она уже?..
…Пискнуло из компьютера полученное письмо в рабочей папке. Это письмо надо было сразу читать, на него надо было сразу отвечать и сразу надо было им заниматься…
«Ладно, потом додумаю, когда разберусь с работой. А пока „поспим“ еще немного. Некогда пока вставать. Поспи, душа. Дела, родная!»
Translation - English “In a word, his life had already reached that stage when all that there is in a man is shrivelled and gasping for breath, when the bow of passion, drawn ever more feebly across the heartstrings, no longer evokes sweet music from the soul, when the touch of beauty no longer fans youthful ardour to scorching flames; and yet all those faded feelings respond to the sound of gold, listening to its illusory tinkling, allowing it, little by little and insensibly to lull them to sleep”
Is this about me?
Yes. It’s about me.
Life is time passed. Feelings have burnt out. There is no more fire, nor flames, only the ashes of former daring and distress, flights and fancies, both sleeping and waking. Instead, there is money in the bank and on the credit cards, jingling a dull lullaby softly to itself. Not that much money, more would be better, but it still has a nice ring to it, nicer than there used to be ten or so years ago, when there was no hope of any thousands of hard currency at all.
But, what is scariest of all is that this is the way it should be; that the soul really does find the seductive tunes that Gobseck and his miserly knight sang more satisfying than the rebellious rock’n’roll songs of the seventies over there and the eighties over here. Maybe it really is “all hail to the madman who plunges mankind into a golden slumber”?
Stop!
If these words can send shivers through my soul, making tears well up; if despite a simple-hearted acknowledgement of the pretty tinkle of piastres and dubloons, credit cards and profit, something in my soul shyly demands another music (even though piastres and dubloons are not the currency to pay for such a tune), would that mean … could everything be turned back? Perhaps even now, even though life has left its mark the touch of beauty can still chase away the pragmatist’s curse, the passionate bow can still be drawn right across the heartstrings to bring it back to life completely one more time with a single purpose, not fragmented in two or twenty pieces as it is now in its sleep? And if the soul can hear this now, and these words can transfix it now, then surely it has awoken already?
Another email arriving in the inbox makes the computer beep. An email that must be read now, answered now, dealt with now …
“Okay, I’ll think it through later, when I’ve finished work. For now I’ll let sleeping dogs lie. Now is not the time to stir them up. Sleep on, my soul! Work is where it’s at!”
Russian to English: Russian Insurance Museum
Source text - Russian С 1998 года в Центральном офисе ОСАО «Россия» работает музей истории российского страхования, собрание которого по размеру и спектру представленных экспонатов не имеет аналогов в мире. Его экспозиция, занимающая площадь около 100 квадратных метров, отражает более чем 200-летнюю историю страхового дела в России. Собрание музея формировалось на протяжении целого ряда лет и продолжает постоянно пополняться уникальными экспонатами. Фонд музея не уступает коллекциям по истории страхования, хранящимся в фондах ведущих музеев России.
Музей уникален, подобного ему нет ни в России, ни в странах СНГ. Что касается других стран мира, то известно только о существовании музеев при некоторых крупных компаниях, имеющих свою многолетнюю историю.
Основу экспозиции составляют коллекции дореволюционных страховых полисов и страховых досок.
Большая часть собранных страховых полисов является настоящими произведениями графического искусства.
Не имеет равных по своему разнообразию и объему (всего более 200 оригиналов) фонд страховых досок — металлических табличек с названиями страховых компаний. Этими табличками раньше было принято обозначать застрахованные здания.
Особое внимание привлекают золотые и серебряные значки, выпускавшиеся страховыми компаниями к своим юбилеям и для солидных клиентов.
Дополняют экспозицию рекламные плакаты, почтовые открытки, фотографии, книги, отражающие различные стороны страховой деятельности.
В одном из залов музея воссоздан кабинет руководителя страховой компании начала ХХ века с ценной антикварной мебелью и редкими предметами интерьера.
Кроме представительских функций Музей решает и просветительские задачи: сотни людей ежегодно посещают его экспозицию. Музей достиг определенной известности и часто обращает на себя внимание телевидения и прессы. В последние годы интерес к музею проявляют страховщики США, Германии, Франции, Финляндии, Китая и других стран.
Translation - English Since 1998 the head office of OSAO Rossiya has housed a museum of the Russian insurance industry. This unrivalled display occupies 100 sq metres of and reflects over 200 years of insurance history in Russia. Built up over many years, the museum’s collection is continually complemented by the addition of new, unique exhibits. Even Russia’s leading museums are unable to compete with regard to coverage of the national history of the development of insurance.
This unique museum has no equal within Russia or the CIS. Further abroad, there are only the museums of individual companies, recording their own illustrious histories.
This exhibition is founded upon a collection of pre-revolutionary insurance policies and fire-marks. The majority of the policies are originals and fine examples of the printer’s art. The collection of fire-marks is unequalled both in variety and number (there are more than 200 exhibits). For the uninitiated, a fire-mark is a metal sign bearing the name of an insurance company. These signs used to be hung on buildings insured by the company named on the fire mark. Of particular significance are the gold and silver fire-marks, issued to celebrate company jubilees or for particularly prestigious clients.
A reproduction of an insurance company director’s office at the turn of the 20th century, with antique furniture and rare interior décor, is the focus of one of the displays, and the exhibition is rounded out by the inclusion of advertising material, postcards, photographs and books about various aspects of the insurance industry.
In addition to its representative role, the museum fulfils an educational function: hundreds of people visit its displays each year. The museum has become well known and is regularly featured on television and in the press. In recent years visitors have included insurers from the USA, Germany, France, Finland, China and other countries.
My knowledge of Russian springs from a passion for the language.
I was lucky enough to be able to start studying Russian in my early teens, enabling me to lay a solid and secure foundation for degree and post-graduate studies. My passion for the language was the impetus behind my two periods of residence in Russia: five months in Rostov on Don as assistant professor of English at Rostov University in 1991, and 2 ½ years in Moscow 1998-2001 working for Aon Insurance Brokers. Living in Russia among the Russians through these two post-crisis periods has given me a unique insight into the culture. These periods of residence, continued contact with my Russian friends and regular travel to the post-Soviet region has helped me to maintain my near native fluency in spoken Russian.
My freelance translation experience has covered a broad scope of topics.
I have a focus on commercial, insurance, criminal and personal legal issues in various jurisdictions. Other material translated includes general correspondence, birth/marriage/divorce and death certificates, and IT systems tender documentation, as well as a wide variety of marketing texts.
My other passion in life is music.
I am actively involved in music-making locally, and it has been my pleasure to meet and work with Russian musicians from the classical, jazz, folk and rock circuits. I particularly relish the challenge of translating song lyrics.
