Jangan Memberi Makan Pada Kera, Mereka Bisa Mencari Makan Sendiri

Do not Feed The Monkeys – They can find their own natural food source by themselves

Anyone who visited Tlogo Putri, Kaliurang, must be familiar by macaques pacing here and there. If you walk to Mt. Merapi’s view post in Tlogo Putri, many more macaques can be seen there.

These macaques are very accustomed to people in vicinity. Most of them rely their food on us, easy food. It’s not their fault if they surround visitors to get food from them. And at times, they loot, steal or grab visitors’ food and belongings. They are not afraid to people.

Kaliurang tourism area closure due to Mt. Merapi eruption has impacting visitors numbers to Tlogo Putri to none. No visitor means no food for macaques. Macaques’ ability to find their own natural food sources has plummeted in exchange to food reliability to tourists.

JAAN-AFJ-COP team feed those macaques on daily basis. First, because their habitat is destroyed and mostly still covered by volcanic ash. Second, because they are so accustomed fed by tourists.

This phenomenon happens not only in Tlogo Putri, but also in other places such as Sangeh, Alas Kedaton, Uluwatu Temple in Bali, and Mt. Rinjani where Relawan Satwa’s tent was ripped off by macaques because of food in it. To Relawan Satwa’s observations this looting will take place in Post II in Mt. Merbabu from Wekas track where the macaques have already started to show their fearlessness towards people and they have also loot and snatch things.

All this things happen because of us. It’s our fault we feed those macaques. First, we introduce human’s food to wild animals. Second, we litter. Those trash we throw away usually contain small amount of leftover food. From those things, the macaques embrace human civilization and act the way they are now.

Moral of the story: DO NOT FEED THE WILD ANIMALS – THEY CAN FIND THEIR OWN NATURAL FOOD SOURCE BY THEMSELVES!
