Hi,

I've downloaded the newest MemoQ yesterday and will have an indepth look at it today.
Here the first things I noticed:

a) Mergings
The merging of databases into the new version will work fine as long as the TMs or DTBs are not too voluminous. If they are, you are better off deregistering them first, make a backup of them and "register as local" them again, otherwise the merging will end in CTD.

b) Speed
Congratulations, the new TM engine is very fast! No more delays when making a concordance with very large TMs.

c) Additional DTB information
I like the additional information about the termbase involved when clicking on a looked-up termbase entry: now if you use multiple termbases, you'll know where the search comes from and all metainformation is displayed.

I will make my first experiments with corporas. As I understand, they should work exactly as a TM, but instead they will also give the exact context as an information.

What doesn't seem to work is the Concordance LSC feature: There are no more looked up entries displayed in orange, although I have activated them in the general Options.
Any idea of how to get them work?

Greets,
Mike

I like it more and more Oct 23, 2010

Hi All,

The most valuable improvements for me are:

1. The new filter becomes more handy and useful

2. Now TM works much better with numbers, formatting (even on pretranslating step)

New "Add multiple alignments" in LiveDocs! Oct 23, 2010

I am using the amazing new feature, "Add multiple alignments" in 4.5, and just thought I'd mention something useful. I am getting perfect alignments from the EU constitution documents, by selecting
(x) Structural alignment, under Alignment options.

This means, that I can add the 500 MB of very good Dutch-English material, automatically, to My corpus in LiveDocs, and us it as a TM.

Here's what one of the file pairs looks like when comparing them in UltraEdit:

And here is the resultant alignment in memoQ:

I'm all eager to install it! Oct 23, 2010

I have asked Kilgray for information as to whether there is anything in particular to take into account to migrate our Server version to 4.5, but I am desperate to install it and try it all!

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I will try to share mine, but first I have to think about some things we could perhaps organise better. We are probably too "linear" after so many years using Trados!...

LSC not working Oct 23, 2010

What doesn't seem to work is the Concordance LSC feature: There are no more looked up entries displayed in orange, although I have activated them in the general Options.

I confirm that LSC is not working in my computer.

There are others bugs:
- The button to select the path for the corpus file does not work.
- Some stability problems. I have experienced several crashes,
especially with the new LiveDocs feature.

The LSC issue is particularly critical, so I would recommend not installing the update
this weekend, until we can have Kylgray's feedback about this.

For the rest, the new features look really promising.

Better to have 2 versions installed while learning with 4.5 Oct 23, 2010

Hi,

the much faster interface and the possibilities with corpora are very impressive.

While learning the new features of 4.5:
For everyone having both a laptop and a desktop PC, I strongly recommend to have both versions installed (4.5 on the laptop and the the latest 4.2-version on PC or vice-versa).
By doing so, you will exclude any unpleasant surprises during your regular work.

Michael,
I'm glad that you're sharing your experience wit

Michael,
I'm glad that you're sharing your experience with the new alignment. May I ask you:
Is UltraEdit also capable of handling very large txt files? If this is the case, then I would urgently need such a tool, as I frequently do search/replace operations in such big files
e.g. TMX files. MS-Word is just too slow for that purpose. Thank you for any feedback!

Hello Mike,

Yes, it will open and happily edit ANYTHING. It also has a very good feature called column editing, which is basically a mode you can switch on and off, which makes it possible to select entire ranges.
Let's say you have a huge list of CSV data.
Like this:

1,1234,example,56.8,another example
2,1234,example,56.9,another example
3,1324,example,56.10,another example

With Column Mode on, you can select just the row with all of the "example"s in it. You first convert to fixed column, select a safe width, like 40,40,40,40,40 ... and then you can edit the file on columns and rows!

I use it do do ALL of my editing of large TMX files, huge .csv glossaries, etc in. They also have sth called Ultra Compare, which is great too.

Anyway, I would highly recommend it. I used to use Notepad++, but this is simply much better.

E.g., I just opened a 350 MB TMX, and can edit it without any problems. Find and replace works, everything works.

Regards,

Michael

LSC solution on the way Oct 24, 2010

Just an update to my previous post. I have notified the LSC and Path button problem to Kilgray and they are working on it. BTW, replying almost inmediately on a Sunday morning... They really seem to take support seriously.

Michael,
Thank you very much for your feedback about UltraEdit. I will definitely download a trial from their homepage, as the operations you mention are just the ones I must do frequently.

My first look Nov 3, 2010

It crashed before I could set up a project. I was hoping switching to memoQ would end all the frustration that Trados caused me, but I'm shocked to see that memoQ is at least as unstable as Tag Editor.

@TvNellen: memoQ is built like a Volvo. Nov 3, 2010

Sure, 4.5 crashes now and again, but I have yet to lose one single piece of data, so I really wouldn't worry all too much about that.

Get the 4.5.21 Nov 4, 2010

TVNellen,
you must really do some weird things to elbow MemoQ down. You are not playing ARMA2 while translating or other processor-demanding stuff like that, do you

Anyhow: be sure to update to 4.5.21 as it has a lot of fixes compared to the first release 4.5.20. Take often a look at the Dashboard within MemoQ to learn about new builds.

So it's like a Volvo that stops on the highway, but nobody gets hurt.

I agree it wasn't entirely fair to compare memoQ to Tag Editor. Although my project did disappear altogether.

This happened with version 4.5.21. I wasn't doing anything crazy, and one would think 4 GB of RAM should be enough... I agree the Kilgray support team is friendly and responsive, but unfortunately I never seem to be able to reproduce the errors I run into.

Maybe this is a stupid suggestion but... is your system fully up to date? Use Windows Update to check. Also, have you run a full antivirus check on your system?

The only moment when MemoQ was unstable for me was when my system was not up to date. Trados taught me not to update it since I always had problems when I did, but in the case of MemoQ it is best to keep it in shape.
