• La aparición de cáncer en el corazón es algo extremadamente raro.
[...] Durante esta semana, algunos lectores me han estado preguntando si existe el cáncer de corazón, probablemente porque han relacionado bien la palabra trombo con la de infarto de miocardio.
La pregunta es realmente interesante, porque la aparición de cáncer en el corazón es algo extremadamente raro. Esto no significa que no exista el cáncer de células residentes en el corazón, pero si que su frecuencia de aparición es muy pequeña. Se considera que los cánceres primarios de corazón (es decir al ser primario significa que tiene ese órgano como origen) es menor del 0,28-0,001% de todos los cánceres existentes.

Podríamos entonces decir que las células del corazón son desde el punto de vista de su capacidad de mitosis más tranquilas y su capacidad de división es extremadamente pequeña. Pero, en algunas ocasiones raras pero existentes, el corazón también puede desarrollar un cáncer. Sin embargo, los tumores cardiacos son en general benignos, casi un 90% de ellos, como es por ejemplo el caso del mixoma.
El mixoma es un tumor cardiaco, pero no canceroso. El mixoma se desarrolla entre las dos cavidades superiores del corazón, las aurículas, creciendo en la pared que separa estas dos cavidades que se llamada tabique interauricular. Casi el 10% de los mixomas son de origen hereditario (denominados mixomas familiares).
No obstante, también existe algún tipo de cáncer maligno que puede desarrollarse en el corazón. Este es el caso del sarcoma cardiaco o también conocido como angiosarcoma.
Los angiosarcomas son cánceres muy virulentos y peligrosos que se generan generalmente en el corazón en la aurícula derecha, que es la cavidad del corazón por donde entra la sangre al corazón, después de pasar por el organismo. El angiosarcoma lo que va a causar es obstrucción de la entrada de la sangre a la aurícula derecha y también va a dificultar su salida desde la aurícula derecha al ventrículo derecho. En palabras más sencillas, va a bloquear el paso de la sangre por el corazón y evidentemente por ello el corazón tiene dificultad para enviar sangre a los pulmones para su oxigenación.
También pueden generarse angiosarcomas en el pericardio, que es la membrana que rodea al corazón, produciéndose la acumulación de líquido entre el pericardio el propio corazón.

[...] This week, some readers have been asking me if heart cancer exists, most likely because they correctly connected the word thrombus (blood clot) with the word myocardial infarction (heart attack).
This is a really interesting question, because the occurrence of cancer in the heart is extremely rare. This doesn’t mean that cancer isn’t present in resident cells in the heart. Cancer is present here, but it develops very infrequently. The primary cancers of the heart (where primary means that the cancer began in a given organ) account for less than 0.001-0.28% of all existing cancers.

It could then be said that, with respect to their ability for mitosis, heart cells are calmer than other cells and that their ability to divide is extremely small. In some rare cases, though, the heart may develop a cancer as well. Nevertheless, cardiac tumors are generally benign. To be specific, 90% of them are benign, as is the case with myxoma, for example.
Myxoma is a cardiac tumor, but it’s not a cancerous one. Myxoma develops between the two upper chambers of the heart, or the atria, and it grows along the wall that separates these two chambers, or the atrial septum. Almost 10% of myxomas are hereditary in origin. (called familial myxomas).
However, there is a certain type of malignant cancer that can develop in the heart. Specifically, this is the case of cardiac sarcoma, also known as angiosarcoma.
Angiosarcomas are very aggressive and dangerous cancers which are typically produced in the right atrium of the heart; this is the heart chamber where blood flows into the heart, following its passage through the body. The angiosarcoma causes an obstruction, preventing blood from coming into the right atrium. It also makes it difficult for any blood to exit the right atrium and go into the right ventricle. In more simple terms, it’s going to block the flow of blood through the heart and so, clearly the heart is going to have trouble sending blood to the lungs for their oxygenation.
Angiosarcomas can also be produced in the pericardium, which is the membrane that surrounds the heart. This results in an accumulation of liquid being produced between the pericardium and the heart itself.

¿Qué diferencia el asma y la alergia?
Ambos problemas tienen relación. Los alérgenos, como el polen o la alternaria, afectan y mucho a los pacientes asmáticos porque no sólo son una de las principales causas de asma, sino que también son uno de los desencadenantes más frecuentes de crisis de asma entre las personas afectadas por esta enfermedad.
Sin embargo, no hay que confundir asma con alergia: la primera es una enfermedad crónica que consiste en una inflamación de los bronquios que provoca que se irriten y estrechen, dificultando la respiración, mientras que la alergia es una respuesta inmunológica o defensiva frente a sustancias que normalmente no provocan reacciones en la mayoría de las personas. Y aunque ambas enfermedades están relacionadas, “no todos los asmáticos son alérgicos ni todos los alérgicos son asmáticos”, indica el Dr. Javier Domínguez, alergólogo del Hospital Universitario La Paz de Madrid.
El asma es una enfermedad muy frecuente en España y constituye un importante problema de salud pública, debido a su elevada prevalencia y a las preocupantes cifras de morbilidad y mortalidad. En concreto, su prevalencia entre la población adulta del país se estima en un 5%. La prevalencia es más elevada entre los menores de 15 años, siendo el asma la segunda enfermedad crónica más prevalente en la infancia y la primera entre las enfermedades respiratorias. En los niños además, la alergia como causante de asma es más frecuente que en adultos.
1. Conocer los niveles de pólenes y las previsiones para los siguientes días de la zona de residencia o del lugar dónde se van a desplazar.
2. Evitar la exposición, minimizando las salidas al campo o parques y limitando el tiempo de permanencia en el exterior si existen concentraciones ambientales suficientes para causar síntomas en esos días.
3. Evitar el uso de lentillas y llevar mascarilla si los niveles ambientales de polen son altos.
4. Ventilar poco tiempo las viviendas y sobre todo evitar abrir las ventanas al atardecer.
5. Comprobar que los filtros de polen del coche y del aire acondicionado están adecuadamente instalados y utilizables.
6. Seguir las recomendaciones de tratamiento pautadas en el informe del alergólogo y las indicaciones de los médicos y pediatras de Atención Primaria.
Translation - English What differentiates asthma from allergies?
Both health problems are related. Allergens, such as pollen or alternaria alternata, severely affect asthmatics not only because they are one of the primary causes of asthma, but also because they are one of the most common triggers of asthma attacks to persons affected by this illness.
Nevertheless, one must not confuse asthma with allergies. The latter is a chronic illness that is described by inflammation of the bronchial passages, which causes them to become irritated and close up, making it difficult to breathe. Allergies, on the other hand, are an immune response or defense against the agents (dust particles) that usually don’t cause reactions for the majority of people. And although both illnesses are related, “not all people with asthma have allergies, nor do all of the people with allergies have asthma,” La Paz University Hospital Madrid allergist, Dr. Javier Domínguez, points out.
Asthma is a very common illness in Spain, and it constitutes a serious public health problem, due to its high prevalence and its worrisome numbers of morbidity and mortality. Overall, its prevalence (rate of incidence) among the adult population of the country is estimated to be about 5%. The prevalence is higher in those younger than 15, asthma being the second highest chronic illness in infancy and the first among respiratory illnesses. Additionally, allergies as a cause of asthma are more common in children than it is in adults.
• Know the pollen levels and warnings in your residential area or the place where heavy pollen is expected for the next few days.
• Avoid exposure, minimizing outings to fields or parks and limiting the time spent outside if the concentration of pollen in the air on a given day is enough to cause symptoms that day.
• Avoid using contacts and wear a mask if pollen levels are high.
• Ventilate your house for a short period of time and, more importantly, don’t keep the windows open after dusk.
• Make sure that the pollen filters of your car and car air conditioning are installed adequately and usable.
• Follow the treatment recommendations outlined in your allergist’s report and the recommendations of primary care physicians and pediatricians.

I am a recent alum of Rutgers University, where I studied Linguistics and Translation & Interpreting.
