key societies

English Other Government / Politics
The recent rise in unfavorable feeling toward the United States, as distinct from animosity toward the United States, was also most marked among younger groups in some key societies. In Britain, about one in five people under the age of thirty had an unfavorable view of America in 2005, double the one in ten who said so in 2002.

Important

It's hard to tell exactly what they mean here. Most likely societies of countries that are important players on the international political and economic scene and/or are allies of the US.

agree Sheila Wilson : As you say, that's probably what it means, although in many ways Britain is no longer particularly "key"

Thank you Sheila. I was thinking e.g. of the fact that Britain was a staunch ally during the war in Iraq.
