"The French team got a bye through the qualifying round."
Bye is usually offered to past winners so they skip the early rounds and begin competing in the next rounds. This is done when the number of competing teams is not a multiple of two. The idea is to allow a multiple of two as number of participating teams in the next round.
In the U.S., NFL for example, a teams gets a bye once or twice a season.

I thought about "דילוג אוטומטי" or something of that nature. If is familiar with the way it is expressed these days in Israel, I'd be most thankful.
