English term

Merchandising

English to Hebrew Bus/Financial Marketing / Market Research Supply chain
Ron Armon posted the Academy's suggested translation, תִּסְחוּר, which I like but apparently didn't catch. I did extensive searches and, since the term refers to the part of the supply chain after production and before sales, my closest guess is אספקת מוצרים ללקוח. I wonder whether any of you is aware of a better and more natural choice. I am hoping for something that has already been used in this sense.

Discussion

wizard_of_words Nov 19, 2011:
with reference to Joab's second comment: According to the Wikipedia (the link cited above):
In the broadest sense, merchandising is any practice which contributes to the sale of products to a retail consumer. At a retail in-store level, merchandising refers to the variety of products available for sale and the display of those products in such a way that it stimulates interest and entices customers to make a purchase.

Lingopro Nov 19, 2011:
I guess it also greatly depends on the context and actual sentence.</br>
קידום מכירות is a well known term and would probably work well.
wizard_of_words Nov 19, 2011:
with reference to both Lingopro and Joab: Indeed, as Joab has noted,
The Academy term, posted by Ron Armon, is
תסחור
And as explained on the Academy site (http://hebrew-terms.huji.ac.il/), its meaning is:
תִּסְחוּר - פעולות נלוות לשיווק הכרוכות בהצגת מוצר ובמכירתו: פרסום, קידום מכירות, תצוגות מסחריות, מכירה ישירה וכדומה
That is, in free translation, all the operations associated with “שיווק” – marketing – i.e., advertising, promotion etc., which, as noted, are used to promote and sustain certain categories of commercial activity.
Obviously, neither “שיווק” nor “קידום מכירות” are one-to-one translations of merchandising, but, in my humble opinion, the latter conveys the message.

Retail merchandising Sorry, I forgot to mention in the question that I am dealing with retail merchandising.
Joab Eichenberg-Eilon (asker) Nov 19, 2011:
Two good suggestions Thanks for your promptness. Both ideas sound good to me, but so far I like קידום מכירות better, since in my mind שיווק has more to do with external factors and seems more general to me than קידום מכירות, which can also refer to classical merchandising activities such as optimized stocking for specific points in the sales cycle, assigning shelf space, etc. That said, I am waiting to see other people's opinions.

קידום מכירות

According to the Wikipedia,

Merchandising is the methods, practices, and operations used to promote and sustain certain categories of commercial activity ... In the broadest sense, merchandising is any practice which contributes to the sale of products to a retail consumer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchandising

According to Babylon (http://www.milon.co.il/general/general.php?term=Merchandisin...
as well as the Academy itself and Maot (http://www.maot.co.il/doSearchSite.asp), the term means:

קידום מכירות, קידום של מכירת סחורות כפעילות נרחבת הכוללת חקר שוק ופיתוח של מוצרים

מילון מעות מציע את המונח הסחרה, לצד תסחור
שלא נשמע הרבה יותר טוב
אז אולי כדאי ללכת על המונח
קידום מכירות, המעביר את הסר

typo:
המעביר את המסר
תרתי משמע ...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I would have used הסחרה or תסחור, but no one would understand it. So thank you again for the practical solution."

שיווק מוצרים

Even the Academy has an entry for תסחור as merchandising.

קידום מכירות as suggested by wizard_of_words, is "sales promotion" and not merchandising in its broader sense – sales promotion is mostly about the actions in promoting products, i.e., billboard posters, cars painted with product logo, etc.; merchandising "is the methods, practices, and operations used to promote and sustain certain categories of commercial activity".
