In a nutshell, here is what Darwin proposed:
Unlike the biblical view that each species was separately created, he hypothesized that all living things...could have evolved from a completely different, earlier species through a process called “descent with modification.” Descent with modification means that subsequent generations inherit the genes of their ancestors, and that random, small, and inheritable genetic changes may occur in an organism that are then passed on in future offspring.
