Personally I think 虛 stresses there is no binding power, and 實 on the contrary suggests that there is concrete evidence. But I am not sure.

: empty and solid is not good in English. What the eye sees is virtual/(simply) an image/fleeting/ephemeral, what is written is real/the truth/dependable/lasting (?)

: FYI 耳听为虚,,眼见为实 = what you hear may be false, what you see is true (外研社:汉英词典) -> what you see may be false, what you write is true ?

: I agree with Lesley. Also, I recon she has a better translation for " 眼见为虚" because I think it means "it 'may be ' false" but not "definitely false".
