Comment: "Clark has certainly provided some useful information. However, if I used "mirror", non-Chinese readers would not be at a lost. I think "registries", "collections", etc. might be better solutions in this context."

Precious Mirror
涉及祖国文化,不敢,也不不可胡乱翻译。FYI
首先,宝鉴非收藏之物品,乃目录,集子,感言……
Precious Mirror
Ref.
1.《风月宝鉴》Precious Mirror of Love ,出现于《石头记》中。可在《红楼梦》的英译本中找到。
link:http://www.bjmti.com/resource/ShowArticle.asp?ArticleID=3756
2.mirror释义中有:to reflect in or as if in a mirror,正好与“鉴”相吻合。
个人建议:
秋林群鹿图 = Deer in an Autumn Forest OR Scroll of deer in an Autumn Forest
《秋林群鹿图(轴)》为清宫廷画师郎世宁(意大利)所作。所谓“收录”实为“记录”。

3.Espejo Rico del Claro Corazón (Precious Mirror of the Clear Heart), or,in pin yin, Mingxin Baojian 明心宝鉴
This is a handwritten, bilingual work:Chinese text in the left, while Spanish translation by Cobo in the right. This book contains many moral aphorisms and sentences selected from both Confucian and Taoist works, and Cobo himself mentions the original author as Lipo-Pun Huan. According to Paul Pelliot (1878-1945), the author of the Mingxin Baojian is Fan Liben范立本, and this is the earliest work that translated ancient Chinese philosophy into a Western language

Whomever reading 《红楼梦》 in English transaltion is not going to be a person of mere avg. educational background, much the same way that a "normal" Chinese is unlikely to read Anabasis/Cyropaedia, whether in Greek original, or in their Chinese/English/French/German/Russian, etc. translations.
