The King Tomato title is suggesting that the plant is very important as a major product of Almeria. I leave it to you to decide whatever you think is best in terms of a Spanish equivalent.

In the areas where the plasticos proliferate, it's hard to miss huge billboards proclaiming the wonderful attributes of particular types of tomatoes. They tend to first give the name and follow that with a snappy phrase about its attributes, such as: Bysonte, 'larga vida con sabor y color'; Poesia, 'el Raf de calidad con resistencias'; and the rather scientific sounding 74-336 RZ, 'calibre constante', where consistent size appears to be the main attribute. It's interesting that only one of the three gives flavour a mention. Obviously these billboards are aimed at the growers rather than the consumers.
After all, tomatoes are big business in Almería. The province produces over a million tonnes every year, with 9,000 hectares devoted to the crop. Over 60% of the crop is exported, with a market value of more than €500 million. During the growing season, between September and May, over 13,000 seasonal jobs are generated.
It's not entirely surprising then, that Almería has taken to celebrating World Tomato Day on February 13th by holding a Tomato Festival and proclaiming itself 'World Tomato Capital'. One year recently, a photo in the media showed Agriculture Minister Carmen Ortiz looking faintly bemused as she stood alongside a large mascot called 'Tomatal', which is basically a man in a large tomato outfit. The sub-heading for the article was: 'Thousands turn out to celebrate the popular red fruit'. The many people who attended could taste different varieties and buy bags of tomatoes at €1. I'm sorry I missed it.
For all the issues associated with the plasticos, including water use and poor working conditions, the industry is making positive strides. Almería is a leading area for the development of organic bio-control solutions for plagues affecting crops. Some would argue that if there were no monocultures, there would be less likelihood of plagues. Nevertheless, the province breeds and exports hundreds of millions of insects annually to help farmers fight crop predators. And Almería itself now has over 13,000 farms using biological pest-control methods.
