French term

agglo de 15

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Assignation. A demolition-rebuilding project which went horribly wrong, allegedly due to the architect's failure to supervise the contractors. But also its failure to carry out soundings as recommended by the ground surveyor.

I've done a bit of searching on this but haven't got it entirely clear: does this figure refer to the thickness of the breeze blocks? In cm?

Not necessarily hollow.

Thanks

agree Jennifer Levey : OK, but I'd omit 'thick', because 15 is a 'conventional' designation referring to the 'width of the block + 1cm for mortar' - an agglo de 15 is actually 14cm thick/wide.

Good point.

A concrete masonry unit (CMU) is a standard-size rectangular block used in building construction. CMUs are some of the most versatile building products available because of the wide variety of appearances that can be achieved using them.[1]
Those that use cinders (fly ash or bottom ash) as an aggregate material are called cinder blocks in the United States, breeze blocks (breeze is a synonym of ash)[2] in the United Kingdom, and hollow blocks in the Philippines. In New Zealand and Canada they are known as concrete blocks (a name common in the United States also). In New Zealand, they are also called construction blocks. In Australia, they are known as Besser blocks or Besser bricks, because the Besser Company was a major supplier of machines that made concrete blocks. Clinker blocks use clinker as aggregate.
In non-technical usage, the terms cinder block and breeze block are often generalized to cover all of these varieties.
:
The use of blockwork allows structures to be built in the traditional masonry style with layers (or courses) of staggered blocks. Concrete blocks may be produced with hollow centers (cores) to reduce weight, improve insulation and provide an interconnected void into which concrete can be poured to solidify the entire wall after it is built. Blocks come in modular sizes, with the most popular typically referred to (by their thickness) as "4-inch", "6-inch", "8-inch", and "12-inch" …

Concrete block is made from Portland Cement, aggregates and water. It is also known as concrete masonry unit (CMU).
:
The standard (nominal ) size of a concrete block (stretcher block) is 8” x 8” x 16”, the actual size is 7 5/8” x 7 5/8” x 15 5/8” the block is produced to this size to account for mortar joints. The block itself is slightly shorter in order to accommodate the mortar used to secure it in place.

neutral Daryo : OK - but since when inches are being used in France???

We do not know from which country the source text originates and which dimensions are used there, But, 15 cm in Europe corresponds to 6 inches in the USA, so it might be translated that way.
