French term

habillage

French to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
In a text about making a short film to promote a product the term habillage comes up a couple of times.

Cartons d’intro

Can anyone please tell me what it means?

Thank you.

Discussion

Jennifer Levey Sep 20, 2022:
@Tony You're right - habillage comes up time and again here. But each time it refers to something slightly different. In English we tend to use different terms for each concept.
Tony M Sep 20, 2022:
@ Asker I'm certain this term has comme up before and been discussed; do try a 'search' to see if you can find that previous question.

onscreen text

I believe "habillage" in the context of film usually refers to a number of different things added in postproduction (see comment from "Cathie61" in the link below), but in this specific situation it sounds like they're referring to onscreen text: the onscreen text identifying the speaker does not appear over the video itself, but against a plain background (though the 'nommé' is giving me pause), then the person appears on the screen, without their name overlaid onto the image.

agree philgoddard : We can't be sure of this, though it relates to "cartons d'intro", which I assume to be introductory captions. You could put a translator's note saying this is an educated guess.

neutral Tony M : Yes, but that's more the 'cartons...' — 'habillage' is a bit more than JUST that...

dressing (graphic dressing)

On découvre le personne à l’écran, sans habillage graphique pour l’identifier = graphic dressing to identify a person (on the screen)

Mentions on screen
Each person who appeared in the films or on stage had on the screen the mention of his name, with a graphic dressing mixing a score by # (“#”, 1960) and the visual identity of the event.

agree Tony M : Certainly the right idea — though I'm far from certain this is actually the technical term we use in the business.

(accompanying) graphics

As far as I can recall, we don't have a single dedicated term for this in the business; however, in the contexts quoted, this would be perfectly understood and sound natural in EN.

motion graphics/design

From some online sleuthing I think 'motion graphics' may be the catch-all term in EN. Not to be confused with 'motion design', which it falls under, though some FR sources I found refer to motion design when discussing habillage, so I'm not entirely sure.

Some explanations in EN of motion graphics:

https://biteable.com/blog/what-is-motion-graphics/
"Motion graphics is animation, but with text as a major component. Essentially, it’s animated graphic design."

https://invideo.io/blog/what-are-motion-graphics/
"Motion graphics refer to animated graphic design. They are pieces of animation or digital footage which create the illusion of motion. Graphic designers usually combine them with audio for multimedia projects."

Some explanations in FR of habillage graphique/vidéo:

http://www.lechoixduroi.fr/habillage-video-original/

neutral Jennifer Levey : Your 'motion graphics' as a 'catch-all' term casts the net far too wide for Asker's context. Your link http://www.lechoixduroi.fr/habillage-video-original/ is what's meant here - and corresponds to my 'lower third'.

Synecdoche is possible but not obvious from the ST; if the speaker meant bandeau or synthé then why not use those well-established terms?

lower third

A quick search for 'habillage' here on Proz.com demonstrates the very diverse ways the French term is used in the audiovisual media.

In this specific instance, it appears to refer to a text (possibly with a graphic element) that identifies the person who is seen speaking; it is usually overlaid over the main picture, along the bottom of the screen.

https://filmlifestyle.com/what-is-a-lower-third/
A lower third is a graphic overlay typically seen in television or film. It contains the name of the person speaking, their job title or company logo, and sometimes other information like location.

That said, I've never before come across the term 'lower third' in the 50 years I've been involved in the AV media, so... only confidence '3'.

neutral Wolf Draeger : Sounds like a 'synthé which is ONE type of habillage'. / See my answer + https://www.avousledirect.com/nos-conseils-pour-preparer-hab... // https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_third /// https://www.veedyou.com/business-intro-video/

Do you have a French-language webref explaining what a synthé is in this context?
disagree SafeTex : There is nothing to garantee it's position here, esp. as the name of a person often appears higher up near their head
