Aqui "black" me sugere azar. Seria então uma noite malfadada/ azarada/desgraçada.
Parece-me que "black" neste contexto confere o sentido de azar.
Normalmente traduzimos o contexto para deixar a narrativa mais interessante, só que, nesse caso, acho necessário traduzir um pouco mais colado com o original.
A coletânea é de 1899, então é possível ser uma referência ao livro que a Maria Laurino comentou.
