Still editing the academic text on "silence in cinema", target language US English.

Does anyone know if there such a thing as "sign category"? That is what the author has used for "categoría sígnica" in a draft English translation, but I can't find it as such. It seems to be specific in the first sentence below. Alternatives gladly received. Many thanks.

"Para configurar el silencio, debe accionarse y expresarse no como “negatividad –el no signo, por supuesto verbal, pero también extraverbal–, pero dicha negatividad tiene, a su vez, categoría sígnica”, por tanto, es ideación activa y efable, eso sí, en silencio. En silencio, las palabras no serán oíbles por parte del interlocutor, pero sí interpretables."

Thank you. Thank you again to all. Apologies for closing without grading. All the answers were potential contenders in different contexts. I researched further because of your feedback but came up with no way of confirming which was meant so left it general in the end. Asked for client feedback but none so far. If I hear more I will insert an extra note and revise the grading if I can. Thank you again so much.

I also see 'signic' and 'signical' on the Internet, but neither word is in any dictionary I could find.

falls into the category of a signifier

Might work, given the context. Saw a reference to silence as a signifier in films in an academic journal when I googled, but I am blocked from accessing the link to the entire article. Sorry.
