trace [out] thy heart

English Art/Literary Religion Christian meditation
Now, following the arousal of your memory, judgment, and affections, apply your meditations to yourself to arouse your soul to duty and comfort and to restrain your soul from sin.56 As William Fenner (1600–1640) wrote, “Dive into thy own soul; anticipate and prevent thy own heart. Haunt thy heart with promises, threatenings, mercies, judgments, and commandments. Let meditation ***trace [out] thy heart***.”

(Let meditation) delineate or define your heart

I think this is one of the usual meanings of "trace out"

The paragraph is basically saying that the heart has to be tamed, and to do this its outlines must be sketched out or defined first. Know your heart.

Thank you! meditation is not yoga here but rather about thinking deeply and looking inwards: "following the arousal of your memory, judgment, and affections, apply your meditations to yourself.." NB it's plural meditations =thoughts

English term (edited): Let meditation trace [out] thy heart.

Practicing meditation regularly will enable you to identify the sinful inclinations of your heart.

As I read this, and in keeping with the author's classical Christian theology, the heart is mainly seen here as being the seat of potential sin and waywardness. The Christian's practice of meditation will reveal the concrete manifestations of this tendency (and thus, it is implied, allow the believer to avoid the commission of sin).

agree Orkoyen (X) : Your take is to the point. I can’t but think of Deuteronomy 10:16, “Circumcise your hearts”.

Thank you, Orkoyen.
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : I don't agree with "Practicing meditation regularly" . This is not about the practice of meditation but rather thinking deeply and defining the heart: "apply your meditations (PLURAL) to yourself"
