Spanish term

plumón

Spanish to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
None of the dictionary definitions I am finding makes sense for this use of pulmón describing an activity at a children's craft center in Chile:

Allí Martina ha aprendido a fabricar, con los materiales más diversos, cosas útiles y fascinantes: un proyector desde una caja de zapatos, un plumón desde un envase de yogurt.

Thanks

Chema, I'm glad you found a site explaining the idea behind this. If you don't have a marker, you can make a home-made one by...

There is a third meaning: a down cluster, that is, a fluffy feather from the under-plumage of geese and ducks etc., with filaments going in all directions. This, of course, is where the quilt meaning comes from. With a pair of scissors and a lot of patience and ingenuity I suppose you might make one out of yoghurt pot. I can't say I find it more unlikely than making a marker pen or a quilt out of one.
Charles Davis Dec 24, 2018:
I found two meanings for "plumón" (having assumed that "pulmón" was a typo, but who knows): quilt and felt-tip/marker pen. Neither seemed plausible to me so I didn't post an answer. I still suspect that "plumón" has some other meaning in Chile that we're missing.
JohnMcDove Dec 24, 2018:
JohnMcDove Dec 24, 2018:
I was seriously doubting this was a "felt-tip" pen But actually, it could be.

In my view, I think it is rather, either a "mattress", or a "down-filled quilt" (miniature size, of course...)

Who has ever "made" or "manufactured" a felt-tip pen?

I personally never learned to do that... ;-)

But, on the other hand, I might be entirely wrong. So, my "4" for confidence level in my answer, is actually unwarranted...

At any rate...

Felices fiestas navideñas..., y todas esas cosas.

All the dictionaries I looked at said felt-tip pen.

The text goes on: «Antes teníamos arte —explica ella—, pero sólo dibujábamos y pintábamos: no creábamos nada. Ahora podemos crear hartas cosas.

agree neilmac : You could conceivably create a (very) thick marker from a yogurt pot, perhaps for graffiti artists?

agree philgoddard : The dictionary says felt-tip pen, but a marker is just a big one of these http://dictionary.reverso.net/spanish-english/plumón

watercolor brush pen

From Linguée:

E: A water color pen is a common paint tool for children. deli-stationery.org

See a watercolor brush pen at: https://www.amazon.com/OOKU-Watercolor-Brush-Pens-Piece/dp/B...

If you look for photos of "envase de yogurt" in Spanish, you will see that some of them are tall and narrow. I'm guessing that the author is suggesting that the paint goes inside the container and a hole is cut in the cap for the brush to stick through. That way, kids can write and draw without having to keep going back to the well for more paint.

down-filled quilt

As I note in my "discussion" entry, I seriously doubt this is referring to a "marker"...

It is rather a mattress or a down-filled quilt. A cushion, if you will...
