Russian term

статью он не вышел

Russian to English Art/Literary History Novel about Vikings
На дворе у Торвинда Кабана из Хиллестада жил человек, которого звали Туранд. Роста он был небольшого, с черными вьющимися волосами и длинным носом. Но хотя ***статью он не вышел***, мало кто отваживался вызвать его на поединок, ибо искусен и быстр был он с мечом.

The novel is written in slightly archaic style.

Jack Doughty (asker) Jun 24, 2015:
Thanks to all Thanks to everyone who contributed to this. Most of the answers were right, so I chose the one I thought most suitable in style.
OWatts is right in saying that stature is not necessarily physical, it is also possible to speak of moral stature.
The Misha Jun 24, 2015:
@ Cern The book in your link is a Russian-made dictionary of idioms. Ordinarily, all such nonnative sources are suspect, but in this case the usage examples they give are perfectly fine. Not much to look at and not much of a brain (to a lesser extent) make for fairly idiomatic English. The problem is however, that you extrapolated that construct mechanically to "build," and that's where it all falls apart. Any other questions, feel free to ask.
Katerina O. Jun 24, 2015:
Mikhail Kropotov, I like your versions. And I don't think 'stature' is appropriate here, as it describes a person's height (at least that's what dictionaries say), while стать is not only about height.
danya Jun 23, 2015:
stature and стать seem to be cognates curiously so, across the languages
Mikhail Kropotov Jun 23, 2015:
He wasn't powerfully built, had no strong physique, didn't appear formidable at first glance

though he lacked / wanted for size / stature

Alternatively, "hardly looked imposing" / "wasn't much to look at", though I like the above better myself.

Прошу прощения, слэш куда-то пропал.
he wasn't much to look at a build / he wasn't much of a build
Peer comment(s):

disagree The Misha : This "wasn't much to look at a build" makes no sense at all. Both your grammar and usage here are incorrect. Nor can you say "he wasn't much of a build". Perhaps "didn't have much of a build," but that's by far not the best way of putting it.

Я думаю, что существительное "стать" в разных контекстах может иметь немного разные значения в зависимости от того, какой смысл вкладывает в него говорящий. Кто-то под статью может подразумевать рост человека, кто-то телосложение, кто-то - и то, и другое вместе. На мой взгляд, в отношении даннного персонажа можно было бы с таким же успехом использовать идиому "мал да удал", поэтому считаю "of short stature" вполне адекватной версией перевода. В любом случае, translation loss будет небольшой.
Еще хорошим вариантом считаю "he lacked stature and build".
Обязательно использовала бы в переводе слово "stature", так как оно очень близко по происхождению и значению к славянскому сущ. "стать" и латинскому statura.
Кстати, носители языка с слово "stature" тоже вкладывают больше, чем просто рост.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Katerina O. : стать is not only about height. Стать - телосложение, общий склад фигуры. 2. перен. Склад, характер, сущность кого-либо, чего-либо. II сов. неперех. 1. Подняться на ноги, принять стоячее положение; встать (о человеке или животном). dic.academic.ru
