- Извините, я так и не нашел, куда сдать коня (коня брали напрокат).

Это из фильма (комедийного)
Конь там живой, настоящий (то есть не железный конь, не машина). Но вот пункт проката лошадей так и не был показан.

Это шутка? :-) Просто не встречал пунктов проката лошадей, а вот "конь" (железный) в значении "автомобиль" в русском встречается очень часто :-)

Would that really work with respect to a horse? I would think it applied to inanimate objects only.

I couldn't find where to drop the horse off / I couldn't find a horse drop-off anywhere

If it's an allusion to the car rental practices (which I thing it is), then you might as well go all the way...
