Spanish term

escandir

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
As in "escandir versos"...a way of reading poetry. Apparently, the English term is to scan, but that would, in the contemporary context, be confusing because scan is used so commonly to mean render via scanner. Any ideas? Recite is close, but the context has to do with time

Discussion

Carol Gullidge Jan 15, 2015:
@Wendy, re scansion afaik, scanning poetry (or making it scan) is what the poet does when he is writing it, i.e., it's a way of writing poetry (with an ear for the metre) rather than reading it
Charles Davis Jan 14, 2015:
You would indeed; it's essential.
Jennifer Levey Jan 14, 2015:
@Wendy You'd do well to show your source text (at the very least a full sentence) containing 'escandir' in context.

to scan

I don't believe there would be any chance of a misunderstanding, given the context.

Many thanks Danik! ;-)
agree Carol Gullidge : agree: context is everything! And if you wish to avoid the verb, then perhaps the phrase cd be turned around to use the noun 'scansion'

chant

What occurs to me - again, absent a little more context - is "chant." In English it has the connotation of Gregorian chant - rhythmic performance of sacred texts albeit in this context with music; and also the term "cantor," someone who performs sacred texts in a rhythmic fashion. Certainly seems better than "scan." The early epic poems are thought to have been performed orally, from memory, long before they were written down; their rhythmic nature was an aid to memorization.
Example sentence:

The chant poem is about as old as poetry itself. In fact, it may be the first form poetry took. Chant poems simply incorporate repetitive lines that form a sort of chant.
