German term

Birnenstabprofil

German to English Other Architecture Kirchenarchitektur
I'm translating a brochure describing the architectrure of a church and am stuck on this term for a kind of ribbed vaulting.

Here is a picture of a "Netzgewölbe, mit hängendem Schlußstein, Rippen mit *Birnstabprofil*".

pear-shaped moulding [US molding]

This is what my Langenscheidt Dictionary of Architecture and Construction includes:
Birnenstab m (Arch) pear-shaped moulding
(the English implies the "-profil" notion)

neutral Helen Shiner : I think this is too modern.

The first link got cut off automatically (because of the apostrophe) after "moulding-st-peter" when I posted my answer. You'd have to add "'s-church-great-haseley" at the end to make the link work. / Yes, you might be right.

Once you get past the Asian characters, the glossary here translates Birnstab as ogee moulding (I'm not quite as certain about the translation as ogee!).

Here's an example of keel moulding:

And an identical (99%) illustration of a Birnstabprofil

Here's another example of (quite complex) keel moulding.

BTW - it is very often seen as "Birnstab", rather than "Birnenstab"

Netzgewölbe, mit hängendem Schlußstein, Rippen mit Birnstabprofil

Would be something like:

Reticulated vault with keel-moulded ribs and a hanging keystone .

Reference:

Birnstab
