English term

push back against...

English Art/Literary Linguistics term
the whole sentence like this:" Athenian democratic culture promoted an ideology grounded in values of freedom, equality,and dignity. It also promoted the critique of democratic failings, thus push back against the tendency to ideological rigidity and conformist groupthink."

What does " push back against" mean here?

resisted

It means that it was against the tendency...

The sentence reads like it's not been written by a native speaker. In particular "push back" should be "pushed back", but there are other indicators. So that probably doesn't help comprehension.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : Yes; indeed, actively resist: oppose (not just stand firm against it but beat it back, as it were). But it's dodgy English, I agree.
