increased oxygen requirements

FIO2 is the fractional inspiratory oxygen concentration - hence if the patient already received oxygen supply, they had to turn up the O2 concentration, or otherwise it just means an increased oxygen demand and necessity to supply oxygen by mask or nasal prongs.

increased FiO2 requirement

The text in source may have been written with zero instead of "O". Anyway, I see it commonly written for a clinical audience as "FiO2" with the "2" subscript edand I believe it is synonymous in some cases with "supplemental oxygen".

"Supplemental O2 is an FIO2 > 21% and is a drug." (ucdenver link)

"FIO2 is one of the parameters of a ventilator that measures the flow rate or percent of oxygen delivered or being received by the patient. The higher the rate the more oxygen consumption being used by the patient. (second link from yahoo answers)"
