This really depends on the context. It could mean either some form of honours/distinction in this field of study or simply the area of studies

neutral cc in nyc : If you mean "excellent, très bien, bien," as in the GDT, those terms are grade-based, whereas "hono(u)rs" are based on course work and/or papers (e.g., honors thesis/dissertation) – at least in the USA.

for example, a BA majoring in languages
"mention" in this case is followed by a discipline, and not "très bien" or other grade.

It is an honours degree, not a grade//just google honours imodegree and you'll see difference between Pass and Hons programmes.
