if this is Beetle Bailey, then rather than actually outwit each other they are all trying to outwit Sarge and Sarge is sucking up to the Lieutenant and the General, so the French translation can be very loose. "ils se font voir de toutes les couleurs" sort of thing.

J'ajoute "désopilante" car on est dans les comic strips.
Cependant, je suis plutôt d'accord avec la remarque d'Emiledgar (voir discussion) qui porte sur le contenu des strips.
Outre "s'en faire voir de toutes les couleurs", je pensais également à "se jouer des tours de cochon", mais on s'éloigne vraiment du texte original...
