greater complexity I see what you mean, but the ambiguity would still remain, whether you change degrees to aspects, elements, levels or whatever, they would still be ambiguoualy "greater". The ambiguity can easily be eliminated with something like "a degree of" or "a level of"

hmmm... as i tried to explain in my previous comment it doesn't seem to me that 'different' levels are what are referred to: if we could translate 'a greater degree/level of ... ' that would be fine but here i understand 'greater complexity and aspects of dissonance' or even 'levels of dissonance', or even at a push 'a degree of dissonance'. However 'degrees of dissonance' sounds like an eighties pop group....

degrees / levels If you look at a thermometer, you see that the degrees are marked off at different levels against the glass tube. The higher the level the higher the degree. In this case (and many others) degree and level are the same thing.

i'm not sure the 'livelli' are really 'degrees' as they aren't modified by the 'maggiore' that comes before, aspects might be closer to the orginal. This meaning is contained in the word 'dissonance'
