Yes, I think the idea of 'jarring notes' works, but there's a slight problem with the visual (mostrano, immagini) being laid on with the audio element ('stonatura'). That said, this is an issue with the original text, so I'd stay 'true' to it. Plus, the author did put the audio term in sneer quotes to draw attention to it, so I'd say it's intentional and should be retained.
