football term

Russian Art/Literary Sports / Fitness / Recreation football
Hi all
This is a sociolinguistic, rather than a strictly translation related question.

I've been commissioned to write a book on the story of Russian football (soccer, that is) - one of my pet subjects. It will be the latest in a series - the publishers have already produced books on Spanish and German football (both really good so I have a lot to live up to). In each case the title of the book is a term in Spanish/German which has a certain resonance to football fans in that country and which somehow encapsulates the spirit of football there. The Spanish book is called Morbo (which kind of means disease, but in a footballing context refers to the deeprooted rivalries between certain clubs), the German book is called Tor (it means goal, but it can also mean fool). I need to think about a good title for the Russian equivalent. Any Russian football fans out there with inspired ideas, I'd like to hear from you...

Unfortunately... ... most of the other options suggested are footballing cliches, which exist in most languages. I know I've set you a tough task here! I know what I want, I just haven't found it yet...

Mazila That's the sort of thing I am after - thanks Olga.
Non-ProZ.com Nov 13, 2002:
to mark thanks, but again, i really need something a little more subtle with a little more subtext.
Non-ProZ.com Nov 13, 2002:
nikita thanks - but that won't work - it is not specific enough to Russia - it is too general and too bland - i need something that has more nuance!

Dan, I think this slogan is very (if not totally) specific to Russia! I\'ve never heard about such slogans in English (e.g. \"Manchester United is a champion!\"). Perhaps you can find such a phrase somewhere but is it a regular slogan? Anyway \"Хxx - чемпион!\" is definitely the MOST COMMON AND MOST POPULAR FOOTBALL SLOGAN IN RUSSIA. Bland? It doesn\'t prevent Russian fans beat each other unmercifully yelling \"Хxx - чемпион!\".

Peer comment(s):

Players.

This is my favourite. It sounds really good in Russian. I even have a feeling that this is what you need.

Reserve.

Captain, captain smile!

This might sound like it is about the captain of a football team. It is really taken from lyrics of an old song. The song is from an old Russian film. "Children of Captain Grant". The song is very cheerful.

If you deside to use this title then you will need to have a photo on the front of your book because otherwise the relationship with football is not obvious.
