: Aricb has a valid point here if you want to be more general an not refer to the brand this is the right choice

Yes, it really depends whether the author meant to reference the brand or not. Thanks for your comment.

: Yes, in principle — except that 'skylight' is rather down-grading a Velux-type roof window

: As the original seems to have "Velux" with a capital, it is very likely that the brand name was deliberately used. Skylights do not necessarily open, Velux do open, so by changing it further specification becomes necessary.

Yes, although the Wikipedia article also capitalizes "Velux" as a common noun. But you make a valid point about the functionality of a Velux window vs. a skylight. Thanks for commenting.

: Had 'em in France, have one in UK. I'd go for 'skylight' but the mnfr. knows best, & it depends on usage - 'skylight' to let light in, 'roof window' to provide window functions eg. light + view of surroundings. 'Blinds' are extra eg. to keep sun out.

Thanks, Charles; as you point out, the appropriate translation depends on the intent of the author.

roof windows
That's what Velux themselves call them, so i think we can take it from the horse's mouth!
VELUX - roof windows, skylights and sun tunnels
VELUX - leading manufacturer of roof windows, blinds, skylights and sun tunnels.

Even if we assume that 'velux' is being used here in the generic sense, when it is used in that sense in FR it almost invariably refers to what we would call 'roof windows', rather than mere skylights (for example, 'chassis'...)
