Variable Dec 30, 2020

Some months were normal compared to other years but projects were very sparse in a few months with May being the worst. My income has decreased by around 25% overall this year.

Workwise... Dec 30, 2020

Pretty much business as usual, apart from the COVID situation. Got a couple of new direct clients by word-of-mouth recommendation.

Hoping for more of the same in 2021 and that the Covid thing gets sorted out...

Here's to a happy and prosperous New Year!

Good workwise - but... Dec 30, 2020

I had as much work as can handle, but the year was so completely dominated by Covid-19 that it is hard to think of anything else.

Other Dec 30, 2020

With the exception of May (a terrible month work-wise), all in all 2020 was much better than I expected because of the Covid situation. My income grew by about 15% compared to last year. Let's hope things in 2021 keep moving in a positive direction for everyone. Happy New Year to you all!

Have you not heard about the crisis there?

Best year ever Dec 30, 2020

Freelance translator since 2005 and 2020 will be my best year ever, despite a very bad month of May (-65%). I have to 'thank' COVID-19 for that: it kind of kicked me in the butt professionnally. It forced me to think of ways to survive and eventually improve myself work organization- and work strategy-wise.

BANG Dec 30, 2020

Q: "How was your 2020?"
A: Slowed right down and then picked up again. Ended with a bang (one particularly large job that will take months to complete)

For the fiscal year, revenue will probably be down 10% or so. Could have been better, could have been a lot worse.

2020 vision Dec 30, 2020

My 2020 was "not too bad."

The Basques laugh at that expression, which I use for a lot of situations. I'm sure it will strike a chord with Tom, too. I get it from my mum, I think, but it's typical of the morose attitude of where Tom and I come from. It's what people say when things are going well (but they didn't actually expect them to):

- How are you? - Oh, not too bad.

- What's the weather like? - Oh, not too bad.

I lost out on quite a lot of business this year, due to Covid and also MT, but on the whole it was, how can I describe it ..., oh yes, not too bad. Because I renewed or boosted my ties to previous online friends this year, I made a lot of new friends online, and I rejoice in both of those, I lost one (Jenny Forbes), and I also - needlessly - made an enemy, but I'll stick with the good stuff.

Still and all, I'd rather push the bad parts of 2020 aside. As Debbie Harry sings in verse three of this song, "All I want is 20/20 vision". 2020 vision is right. Vision in the rearview mirror:

Not so bad Dec 30, 2020

November was only crumbles, but otherwise, it has not been so bad overall.
Besides, I've got two Abeno-masks with fleas and a generous amount of benefit of 970USD one time from the government.

I should think that translators were prepared for such a year Dec 30, 2020

My 2020 was fine in an economical sense, and not so bad in other senses too. While I can only speak for myself, it seems to me that translators were better prepared for this kind of conditions than nearly every other profession. We work at home anyway, and we work online in most cases, so that we were not in the least affected by the conditions or even lockdowns. I did not need to change a thing in the way I work. We don't need (or even want) to meet people in person anyway, we don't need to ride crowded buses or trains. We can live in rural areas with enough breathing space around us too and don't need to go where our work is.

While some clients had less work than before, in other cases the workloads increased a lot, since half of the world is sitting at home and needs new videogames translated, and every business that wishes to survive goes online at last and creates new content that needs translation. Many new offers in fields like video conferences and online workspaces appeared or were hastily put together. In other words, there was change, and translators always thrive when there is change, since change creates new content. Just remember the GDPR.

I can imagine many professions that have a lot more reason to complain than ours.
