Tuning Procedure
Tools
To tune a, piano, you'll need a tuning lever, tuning fork or bar, felt temperament'strip, and some wedge mutes.
Buy the best tuning lever that you can afford, preferably an extension lever. Few professional tuners ever extend the handle, but most prefer the extension lever over a smaller, lighter one because the extension lever is sturdier and it flexes less.
For the most efficient tuning, you should have a tuning lever tip for each size tuning pin. To begin, order #2 and #3 tips, and short and medium length heads. Use the tip that fits the best on your piano. Ideally, the tip should fit over the pin snugly when the end of the tip almost touches the coil of wire on the pin. If the tip won't go on the pin far enough, use a larger tip; if the end of the tip touches the music wire coil, use a smaller tip. If you progress into professional tuning, purchase as many tips and heads as necessary so you don't have to change the head on the lever than to change the tip on the head.
The impact hammer is a tuning lever that has a little slack between the handle and tip. With the tip firmly placed on the tuning pin, you can bump the pin in small increments by wagging the handle, instead of turning is smoothly as you do a tuning lever. Some tuners prefer an impact hammer, but you should learn to tune with a regular tuning lever first.
The best tuning fork is a plated steel one.
Large aluminium forks and bars look impressive, but a steel fork is better because it remains more stable when the temperature changes. Obtain an A-440 fork for all conventional tuning. If you plan to tune orchestrions containing organ pipes, xylophones, or bells tuned to A-435, get an A-435 fork too.
You’ll also need a felt temperament strip and some wedge mutes. There are three strings per note in the treble of most pianos. Some tuners favour muting all bichord and trichord unisons throughout the piano at once. If you choose this method of tuning, you’ll need two or three temperament strips. Get a dozen long slender rubber wedge mutes, and a dozen shorter wider ones, for muting strings where a temperament strip is inconvenient to use.
One other tool is handy for learning to judge the speed of beats; a metronome. This is a mechanical, electric, or electronic device that is set to tick at a certain speed by adjusting a dial or sliding scale. You can purchase a metronome from a piano supply company or must music stores where musical instruments are sold.
Tuning Exercises
It is very difficult to learn to tune by practicing on a piano that has hammers that click, wobble, and miss some strings, an action that is so badly regulated that the hammers don’t have enough power to produce good solid tones, strings so rusty that they break, single strings that produce beats, tuning pins that jump or are so loose that they don’t stay in place, and so forth. Repair any such defects before attempting to learn to tune.
If you haven’t had any previous musical experience, or if you’re unsure of what a beat sounds like, obtain and study one of the good videotapes on tuning. (see the Appendix.) You might also find it helpful to locate a good piano tuner and have your piano tuned professionally. Watch your tuner’s posture and grip on the tuning lever. Listen very carefully. When the tuning is complete, you might not understand everything the tuner did, but your piano should be in tune, giving you an example of what it should sound like.
Using the Tuning Lever
The first skill to learn is the correct use of the tuning lever. Above all, you must learn the feel of applying the right amount of force to the lever. Without this feel, it will be impossible for you to control the way the pins turn and make the stay in the right position. Unless a piano is drastically out of tune, you will move the lever only a tiny amount at a time, so learning this feel is very important. Using the most rigid lever possible and the right size tip for the best fit on the tuning pin is a big help.
Steel (of which tuning pins are made) is a very elastic material. Thought the pins are embedded as deep as 1 ¼” in the pinblock and have some support from the plate bushings, they can bend enough to affect the pitch of a string, and the torsion (which could be termed “internal wind-up”) can also affect the pitch. You must learn to rotate the pin, feeling the amount of twisting and bending as you manipulate the lever. Any twisting or bending is only temporary, and a string that you tune by flexing the pin will go out of tune as soon as the pin springs back to its natural position. Because of the tight grip of the pinblock and the slight flexing of the pins, you must first turn each pin a little too far and the ease it back to the position where it will stay. Tuners call this procedure setting the pins.
Visualize an extra long tuning pin coming out the bottom of the pinblock in a hypothetical grand piano, and imagine a pointer extending out perpendicular from the bottom of the pin. As you begin twisting the top of the pin with your tuning lever, at first the pointer doesn’t move. As you apply more force to the lever, the whole pin finally rotates, ands the pointer moves. When uou release the tuning lever, the top of the pin springs back a little, but the pointer stays put. This has actually been demonstrated at a Piano Technicians’ Guild convention, proving the importance of setting the pins when tuning.
You must also learn how to set the same amount of tension along the entire length of the string. Each string passes from the tuning pin across several bearing points. There is friction at each bearing point. As you raise the pitch of a string, you add tension to one end. Imagine stretching a rubber band over a small box and pulling on one end. That end has much more tension than the center section, because of the friction at the bearing point at the edge of the box. The friction in the rubber band example is greatly exaggerated, but the same effect does occur to a lesser extent in a piano. If you raise the pitch of a string by turning the tuning pin in a single motion, the string segment nearest the tuning pin will have more tension than the speaking segment. When you play the string loudly, the hammer blow will equalize the tension a little, causing the string to go sharp. Conversely, if you lower the string tension by turning the pin in one motion, the segment nearest the tuning pin will have less tension, and the string will go flat. Therefore, you must play each note loudly during each movement of the lever, to try to equalize the string tension. Tune and play, with increasingly smaller movements of the lever, until the string remains in tune after you play it loudly. Tuners call this procedure setting the strings.

Voor het stemmen van een piano heeft u een stemhamer, een stemvork, een vilten stemlint en een aantal keilen nodig. Koop de beste stemhamer die u kunt betalen, bij voorkeur een uitschuifbare hamer. Er zijn maar weinig professionele stemmers die het handvat uitschuiven, maar de meesten geven toch de voorkeur aan de uitschuifbare hamer in plaats van de kleinere en lichtere versie, omdat de uitschuifbare hamer steviger en minder buigzaam is.
Om zo efficiënt mogelijk te stemmen, heeft u een inzetstuk met stergat voor elke maat stempin nodig. Om te beginnen kunt u het beste stemhamerkoppen in maten #2 en #3 bestellen, en korte tot mediumlange inzetstukken. Gebruik die kop die het beste past voor uw piano. Een kop past het best wanneer die precies over de stempin valt, waarbij het uiteinde van de kop de spiraaldraad van de stempin net niet raakt. Als de kop niet ver genoeg over de stempin valt, gebruikt u een grotere kop; als het uiteinde van de kop de spiraaldraad raakt, gebruikt u een kleinere kop. Als u vordert richting het professionele stemmen, koop dan zoveel mogelijk verschillende koppen en inzetstukken, zodat u in plaats van het inzetstuk op de hamer slechts de kop van het inzetstuk hoeft te vervangen.
Een reflexhamer is een stemhamer met een beetje bewegingsruimte tussen het handvat en de kop. Door de kop stevig op de stempin te plaatsen, kunt u de pin steeds een klein beetje meer aanstoten door het handvat heen en weer te bewegen (in plaats van de vloeiend draaiende beweging die u met een stemhamer maakt). Sommige stemmers geven de voorkeur aan een reflexhamer, maar het is verstandig om eerst met een normale stemhamer te leren werken.
De beste stemvork is er een van plaatstaal. Grote aluminium stemvorken zien er vaak indrukwekkender uit, maar een stalen vork is beter omdat deze stabieler blijft bij temperatuurwisselingen. Koop een A-440-vork voor al het normale stemwerk. Als u orchestrions(1) wilt stemmen met orgelpijpen, xylofoons of klokken die op A-435 gestemd zijn, koop dan ook een A-435-stemvork.
(1) 1 Het orchestrion is, kort gezegd, een automatisch instrument, bedoeld voor openbare gelegenheden. Het bestaat uit meerdere instrumenten die in één meubel zijn samengebracht en die door een gemeenschappelijk muziekprogramma worden bespeeld.
U heeft ook een vilten stemlint nodig en wat rubberen keilen. Er zijn drie snaren per noot in de diskant van de meeste piano’s. Sommige stemmers kiezen ervoor alle 2- en 3-korige harmonieën in de hele piano tegelijk te dempen. Als u voor deze methode kiest, heeft u twee of drie stemlinten nodig. Koop verder een twaalftal smalle rubberen keilen en een twaalftal kortere en bredere keilen, om snaren te kunnen dempen als de stemlinten lastig te gebruiken zijn.
Een ander hulpmiddel, dat handig is bij het beoordelen van het tempo van een ritme, is de metronoom. Dit is een mechanisch, elektrisch of elektronisch apparaatje dat wordt geprogrammeerd om een bepaald tempo te tikken door het tempo in te toetsen of een gewichtje te verschuiven. Metronomen zijn verkrijgbaar bij zaken voor piano-onderdelen, of bij muziekzaken waar instrumenten worden verkocht.
Oefeningen om te stemmen
Het is erg moeilijk te leren stemmen als u oefent op een piano met tikkende of wiebelende hamers, ontbrekende snaren, een slecht afgestelde mechaniek (waardoor de hamers niet genoeg kracht hebben om mooie, volle tonen te produceren), met roestige snaren die op elk moment kunnen breken, snaren die losse slagen maken, stempinnen die verspringen of zo los zitten dat ze niet op hun plek blijven, enzovoorts. Repareer dergelijke defecten altijd voordat u gaat leren stemmen.
Als u nog geen muzikale ervaring heeft of als u niet zeker weet hoe een slag klinkt, koop en bestudeer dan een goede video over het stemmen van piano’s (zie Appendix). Het kan ook handig zijn een goede pianostemmer op te zoeken en uw piano professioneel te laten stemmen. Let daarbij op de houding van de stemmer en zijn grip op de stemhamer, en luister goed. Na het stemmen kunt u zich waarschijnlijk niet alle handelingen van de stemmer herinneren, maar uw piano is dan wel goed gestemd waardoor u een goed voorbeeld heeft van hoe het moet gaan klinken.
Het gebruik van de stemhamer
De eerste vaardigheid die u onder de knie moet krijgen is het correct gebruiken van de stemhamer. Allereerst moet u een gevoel aanleren voor het uitoefenen van de juiste kracht op de stemhamer. Zonder dit gevoel zal het onmogelijk worden om de manier waarop de stempinnen draaien te bedienen, en ervoor te zorgen dat ze op hun plek blijven. U beweegt de stemhamer steeds maar een klein beetje (tenzij een piano drastisch ontstemd is), dus het aanleren van een gevoel hiervoor is erg belangrijk. Een zo recht mogelijke stemhamer en een stemhamerkop in de maat die het best past op de stempin kan daar veel aan bijdragen.
Staal (het materiaal waar stempinnen van worden gemaakt) is een zeer elastisch materiaal. Hoewel de stempinnen zo’n 1 ¼” (ca. 3,175 cm) diep in het stemblok vastliggen en een beetje steun van de plaatbehuizing hebben, zijn ze buigzaam genoeg om van invloed te zijn op de toonhoogte van een snaar. Ook de torsie (die ook wel 'interne opdraaiing' genoemd zou kunnen worden) kan invloed hebben op de toonhoogte. U zal moeten leren om de stempin zo te draaien dat u de mate van draaiing en buiging aanvoelt bij het bedienen van de stemhamer. Doordat de stempinnen door het stemblok maar minimaal kunnen bewegen, moet u eerst elke pin iets te ver draaien om hem vervolgens gemakkelijker terug te draaien naar de positie waar hij zal blijven. Door stemmers wordt deze handeling het ‘zetten’ van de stempinnen genoemd.
Probeer nu een extra lange stempin voor u te zien die uit de onderkant van het stemblok komt in een hypothetische vleugel, en denk daarbij aan een soort naald die loodrecht aan de onderkant van de pin uitsteekt. Als u aan de bovenkant van de stempin begint te draaien met uw stemhamer, zal de naald eerst niet bewegen. Naarmate u meer kracht op de stemhamer zet, zal de hele stempin uiteindelijk gaan draaien en zal ook de naald bewegen. Als u de stemhamer loslaat van de stempin zal de bovenkant van de pin een beetje terugveren, maar de naald blijft zitten. Dit werd al eens gedemonstreerd op de bijeenkomst van het Piano Technicians’ Guild, waarmee het belang van het zetten van de stempinnen bewezen werd.
U moet ook leren hoe u op de gehele snaarlengte dezelfde spanning zet. Elke snaar gaat vanaf de stempin over enkele lagerpunten heen. Er is sprake van wrijving bij elk lagerpunten. Door de toonhoogte van een snaar hoger te maken, zet u extra spanning op een uiteinde. Probeer maar eens een elastiekje over een klein doosje te rekken en aan een uiteinde te trekken. Dat uiteinde heeft meer spanning dan het middengedeelte, door de wrijving bij het lagerpunt aan de rand van het doosje. De wrijving in het voorbeeld van het elastiekje is wel erg gedramatiseerd, maar hetzelfde effect doet zich in mindere mate voor bij een piano.
Als u de toonhoogte van een snaar omhoog haalt door de stempin in één vloeiende beweging te draaien, zal het gedeelte van de snaar dat het dichtst bij de stempin zit meer spanning hebben dan het middengedeelte. Als u de snaar hard aanslaat, zal de slag van de hamer de spanning een beetje meer gelijk maken, waardoor de snaar met een halve toon wordt verhoogd. Omgekeerd is het zo dat als u de spanning van de snaar verminderd door in één beweging de stempin te draaien, het gedeelte van de snaar dat het dichtst bij de stempin zit de minste spanning zal hebben, en de snaar een halve toon wordt verlaagd. Daarom is het van belang dat u elke noot vrij luid aanslaat bij elke beweging die u met de stemhamer maakt, om zo de snaarspanning gelijk te kunnen krijgen. Blijf stemmen en aanslaan, met steeds kleinere bewegingen van de stemhamer, totdat de snaar zuiver in stemming blijft nadat u hem luid aanslaat. Deze handeling wordt door stemmers het ‘zetten’ van de snaren genoemd.
