Root wads, logs, and transplant riparian vegetation have been used for stream bank protection and fish habitat by the author since the late 1960s in response to the high costs and appearances of many hard‐control structures, such as rip‐rap. Modifications of the use of root wads and log revetments in the mid‐2000s led to the current Toe Wood design; the following are the main modifications:
1. The majority of the wood is submerged to avoid deterioration
2. A bankfull bench is required to reduce bank height, reduce the amount of wood, and
improve riparian vegetation response
3. The riparian vegetation is transplanted directly on the upper one‐third of the bank to provide better overhead cover and improve the rooting depth and long‐term function.
The Toe Wood structure incorporates native woody material into a submerged, undercut bank to replicate natural stable streambanks and to add flow resistance for streambank protection
(Figure 9‐27). The toe material is comprised of root wads that are cantilevered over foundation logs to provide an undercut bank for instream and overhead cover for aquatic habitat. These logs are placed below the low flow channel to ensure that the wood is submerged throughout the year to prevent wood deterioration.

El autor ha utilizado raíces, troncos y vegetación de ribera para proteger los márgenes de los ríos y los hábitats de peces desde fines de 1960 debido a los costos elevados y a la apariencia tosca que poseen muchas estructuras de control sólidas, como las escolleras. Las modificaciones en el uso de raíces y revestimientos con troncos a mediados del año 2000 llevaron al diseño Toe Wood actual. Estas son las modificaciones principales:
1. La mayor parte de la madera se sumerge para evitar el deterioro
2. Se necesita una meseta de inundación para reducir la altura de los márgenes, disminuir la cantidad de madera y mejorar la respuesta de la vegetación de ribera.

El material Toe está compuesto por raíces que se colocan en voladizo sobre los troncos de base, lo que brinda un margen socavado y proporciona protección interna y superior para el hábitat acuático. Los troncos se colocan por debajo del canal de flujo lento para asegurar que la madera estará sumergida a lo largo del año y prevenir su deterioro.
