I haven't had an outage for a very, very long time...

My outages are few and far between nowadays, and don't usually last more than an hour or so, or maybe twenty-four hours max. In these cases, I usually go somewhere else, like a friend's place, or any bar, cafe or similar establishment with Wi-Fi facilities.

Does the poll question make sense in English?

Doesn't "in case of outages" mean "when there is an outage" rather than "in case there is an outage", or is that just me?

My internet provider is extremely reliable, only one outage so far (which happened on my very first day after quitting my day job, eeks!), and friendly neighbours with a different provider who allow me to use their wifi if I need to.

If there was a power outage (outage = power outage, right?), you wouldn't able to connect to the Internet at all since the power on your computer (if it is a desktop type connected to the internet), other internet connecting hardware such as a router and the host (ISP) would probably be caput anyway. So, having a backup ISP probably wouldn't help you at all. IMHO

You wouldn't even be able to while away the time on Proz quick polls.

Unless, some of you translators have really creative backup systems, that is.

I've never had an outage. If I did, I have mobile data and plenty of places with free WiFi, although I wouldn't work on confidential documents in, say, a cafe.

I am assuming that my internet provider has messed up and they are not online??

If that is the case, then I have my good old iPhone as a modem. And if that goes wrong then the world probably in not rotaing anymore and then it does not matter....

I used to Jul 21, 2017

I used to have a mobile internet service provider as a back-up in case my fixed line internet failed, but I couldn't justify the cost as I hardly ever had to fall back on it and never for any great length of time.

No need - they're not responsible for outages Jul 21, 2017

My ISP is very reliable. If there is an outage it is likely due to an electricity outage - common where I live - or a problem with the aging copper wires that carry the ADSL service to my house, neither of which my ISP has any control over.
And no, I don't live in the outback, I am about an hour away from the centre of Melbourne.

One ADSL connection, and two 3G connections (mobile data), each is fitted on a different device (a tablet, and a smartphone for when I'm out of my "oasis", aka home). Where I live, I have no choice but to be fully equipped for all kinds of outages.
Yet, last week we experienced a complete absence of ADSL, mobile, and 3G services for 5 hours. It was a first in over five years. Luckily, I didn't have a deadline that night so the only issue was having to work on my translations offline and do

I don't pay for two providers, because interruptions in Internet service are very rare and last for a short time. In case of power outage, my router would not work anyway.

In case of emergencies I tether Internet through my mobile. A different service provider, so my main provider's Internet interruptions don't apply, and it's not dependant on being plugged in, so it can work with my laptop in case of no electrical power.

Outrages Jul 21, 2017

Whenever I see the word "outage" I think at first that it's "outrage" - and maybe it really is. "Outage" is one of those modern words I don't much like.
"Such spoutages of outages,
With images of innages,
Give rise to doubtful poutages,
Or else to scornful grinnages."

In the case of an electricity outage, which is rare, but not unheard of here, I have an UPS that gives me 15 minutes or so to transfer my job to my laptop, and I can then carry on working as long as the battery lasts.
My laptop picks up the wireless connection to the Internet provider.

If the Internet provider is playing up... which is extremely rare, then I simply have to wait until they reconnect - I have no alternative.

I don't like the way the question is formulated either. But that is Globish for you, I suppose.
